I just got tapped to Coach a football team here in Sweden. I've never coached at all and haven't played organized ball in over 20 years.
Do you guys have any suggestions for playbooks, drills, gameplans, etc? Anything on books or on the web. Thanks.

Not really kids. 17 to 24. All undersized by our standards. Only 2 guys over 200 lbs. Most have never played before.

I'm really starting from scratch. No blocking sleds, not enough equipment. I had to drive to the dump to get tires for a running drill.

I really want to give these guys a solid base. They have the desire, they just never had a chance to play. I feel like a missionary.

Let's get to the truly pressing questions here. I know it's been asked before but WTF does "fagelpojke" mean? "Fag will poke"? It's something like 7:30 at night in Sweden so expect a quick answer. Unless he's out drinking with the Swedish Bikini Team and I'll go catch a plane to Stockholm.

AE: "Fagelpojke, I've got some great news"

FP: "You mean you have a ton of experience coaching football and can really help me out and get this team going?"

AE: "No, but I did save a ton of money by switching my car insurance to Geico".

Seth,
I've been working on stuff for some time now - mainly offense, prepping for the boys when they get a little older. I have a lot already prepared, but it's in a notebook - which doesn't translate well to the web.

Did you make your own playbook in Madden yet? That's pretty much how every successful coordinator started out.

A playbook?

Usually the 1st experience a kid has with one of those is maybe 12 pcs of paper off a copier machine, with 2, no more than 3 plays on a page, tops.

All but maybe 4 are run plays (dives, etc) and this is when they're like 10.

After a while, I can see gettin a little more intricate- but if you're waitin til their just a "little older" to bust out your notebook, well, I dunno.

Also curious, do you intend to undermine or supplament your boys actual coaching experience (their real coach assuming they;re playin organized football) by inserting or practicing your plays in addition to their studying their own "playbook" that their real coach gives em in July to memorize?

If i were their actual coach, and they didnt know their assignments cos you're in the backyard teaching em your plays, or they confuse my playbook and the one from home- thus reducing my ability to play them, which then likely leads to a Daddy/Coach talk, and the ugliness that's inevitable in the scenario Ive outlined above, well, again, i dont know.

This sounds a tad Marinovich to me. But diferent.

I know you're well intentioned here, but wouldnt the best thing to do be just reinforce what exposure they 1st receive is via the actual coach's playbook?

Unless you yourself are actually planning on coaching football. And then you had better be ready.

Football Dads are far diferent than Soccer or Baseball ones, not that all cant be ruthless, but you had BETTER KNOW YOUR STUFF or they'll sniff that out day one and plot your publically embarrassing ouster.

--------------------------------------------

FlagPoke- my brother coaches at Red Lion Christian Academy and theyre heading into only their 3rd season. Like what you'll be facing, these kids were older (HS age tho you're goin to be dealin with older people- the basic pt is that they're less like little lumps of 11 yr old clay you can mold) and they too had NO experience.

He attended clinics in Fla. put on by Dungy, Wansdtedt etc and I think he has some materials I could MAYBE get your way if you contact me thru the guys. I will contact him now to see what he has.

Guys, calm down.

First, my boys will be in midget football, so I’ll hold off on implementing the West Coast Offense until they’re at least eight years old. In other words, I know what to expect.

Sheesh.

Anyway, I’m breaking down a number of sources so my boys can have fun while playing, but also learning the game. However, I have enough material that isn’t at the Pop Warner level that may be of assistance to a guy just starting out and can expect more from the team than “run around in circles til the whistle blows.”

Just trying to help the guy get started so he doesn’t have to go through a ton of research picking up what I’ve already taken down. He can take it or leave it, but if he really is starting from scratch, I think what I’ve collected and written so far can help.
