AZ- nice pt.

F4F-

Im sure that the slurs werent Mel's messing up. Doesnt suggest for a second that they were alright- exact opposite- I think I tired to convey that AS HIS PUNISHMENT for messing up- he was permitted to slip up in public and being who he is with the history he has, it could be VERY COSTLY LESSON for Mel. Does that make sense?

Im not downgrading the severity of what he said or that it could have offended Jews- no question, just readin your thoughts (a presumed Jew on my end from your posts) it DID offend for REAL.

And you arent holdin a grudge and are allowing him to repent and make good, which it seems he's trying to do.

But i agree that "oh, i was drunk" isnt an excuse (with Munch).

As for my speculating that there are more than a couple Jews in Hollywood who werent happy with a) His making that Movie (Havin read comments about how some Jews felt that he vilified them in Christs Death) and B) Someone elses's pt that it was such a hit and the H-wood community saw none of it.

I'm stickin with that man. THERE WAS A TON of fall out against Mel by Jews who HATED how they felt he portrayed them.

seth - i'm still not totally clear on what your mean that mel's slurs werent messing up - are you saying that since he meant what he said, it doesnt qualify as a mess up? if so, i agree. if not, please explain again. i may be slow.

regarding your point about pissed off hollywood jews, no question that some jews were upset about their portrayal in "passion". i was referring to your position that the real reason they were pissed is because they couldnt make money off the film, as NEAG had earlier suggested.

regarding the "alcoholic" excuse, i'm really sorry i even mentioned it. really, i was just trying say, "the guy has some problems, including a long-term problem with alcohol, so i'm willing to give him another chance if he "walks the walk, not just talks the talk"

i never have used alcohol as an excuse for my own drunken transgressions, and certainly in no way meant to convey that i was giving mel one.

as for H-wood Jews, i think they were pissed cos of how they felt their peeps were portrayed, and as salt in the wounds, the film had no big studio backing.
But primarily cos the hot shots in Hwood didnt like how their kind were portrayed.

And I think you read me right on Mel and the true Mess up.

The MESS UP was him going and doing something that he technically knows is something that as well as against the LAW, isnt acting like Christ. Now, no judging here to be sure, but as all Xtians know you run the risk of havin to pay the price - and in this case he paid the price w/. the law in his arrest, but additionally I THINK that he was allowed to spew stuff that he either felt./feels still/or feels and has tried to work thru.

Either way- I think at one pt those feelings found a home in Mel and i think as his punishment, this is a lesson he is being taught the tough way- outside the Law. so yeah, you get it.

well, eaglegurl, the movie was thought to portray pilate as sympathetic to christ but had his hand forced by the jews. it has been one of the main points of anti-semitism ("his blood be on our hands and our children's") since then...

it's a point of frustration for jews that they have been blamed as christkillers and thus persecuted for something most likely didnt happen regarding their ancient ancestors.

when i say "most likely didn't happen", i'm referring to pilate's portrayal as a being sympathetic to the j- man, not the crucifixion itself. not trying to start a holy war here.

Hey, not to be a jackass here, but maybe if we spent more time judging our own acions than those of some Hollywood celebrity, we wouldn't get into arguments about who on the level is the real addiction subject matter expert.
Just saying.

I never claimed to be an expert. In fact anyone with any knowledge at all about the subject will tell you there is no such thing as expertise. There is plenty of experience though. Experience of things that work and don't work. And what doesn’t work is giving someone some slack the instant they say "I'm an alcoholic and I am getting help."

That is what our little Boychik implied and I simply wanted to point out how dangerous that can be. He has since back peddled off the statement and said it isn't what he meant, so I think he gets the point.

Yiddish term...fitting for this thread

It is a term of endearment for "young man"

Kinda like when Yoda call the young Jedi's "young-lings"

Im fairly certain that it never came up in Return of the Jedi, which is Yoda's comin out party and NOT the CGI'd Yoda that many here likely cheered as he wielded a lightsaber, flipped around and acted like a bad ass...

I'm almost certain that I am quite older than you Seth. And I agree that the newer movies aren't in the same league as the originals, Empire being the best by far.

I can't help myself though, I do like parts of all of them...bastardizations and all
