That's the way it goes, SZR. Always has, alway will. To do it much differently would be to overstate the importance of 1 game. If Arkansas is really that good, they'll get their chance to prove it. But what was the score of the USC game again?

OK, Glenn, I do see what you're saying, but in an improbable scenario, let's say that Arkansas and Auburn both win out the rest of their schedules, and margin of victory is the same, etc., then it would seem that Auburn would still be ranked higher at the end of the year. All because of the preseason rankings. What more would Arkansas have to do?

So are you advocating that Auburn be ranked 18, or for Arkansas to leapfrog even more teams that never got the chance to play them (Arkansas)? It's not a perfect system, it never will be. The longer you watch it, though, the more understand and appreciate that. The best solution is always the same for each team: Don't Lose.

Again, it's not a perfect system. There won't be a playoff anytime soon. Why is it that I am perfectly comfortable with no playoff? I think some of the "What If's" and "Who would have won had they played" kind of add to college football's attraction, mystique, and allure.

Glenn, I guess I am advocating that Arkansas be ranked higher than Auburn. Don't know where in the rankings each would fall, but to me it's intuitive that if you beat a team and have the same number of losses, you should be ranked higher than them.
Also advocating a reform of the preseason rankings and their importance. Of course this problem would be mitigated if there was a playoff system, like in hoops.

The logistics of a Div-I football playoff are just so much greater than that for either D-I hoops or D-I-AA football, it's not even funny.

I feel like there are just as many arguments against the playoff as there are in favor of it. Personally, I'm OK with the current system-- especially if they incorporate the "+1" idea that's been kicked around for some time.

I think a playoff system would still provide as much excitement as the current system, plus the games would be settled on the field at the end of the season.
Do you really think that if UM loses by one to OSU, that their season should be done for all intents and purposes?
PSU has finished undefeated 5 times and only have 2 nat'l championships to show for it. It would be nice to see them have a SHOT at playing for the title.

As have other teams, Nova. Auburn, for one. Plus Michigan in 1974. It's is a HUGE logistical problem to have to stage these late games on weekly process for the playoffs, move and house all the people necessary for each school, plus fill all the seats necessary. Only possible way to do it would be to play through most of the month of December or something.

It would not be done, that's what nobody understands, they WOULD have had their shot that BCS Champ game and fallen short. There is no dishonor in finishing in the top 5.

Glenn beat me to it. I think Nova's scenario is what makes college football so great. If--and it's a big if--Michigan and Ohio State make it to that game undefeated... I mean, can you imagine how huge that's gonna be? That becomes perhaps the defining event of the college football year.
If there were a playoff? Eh-- now the loser just has motivation to return the favor in a few weeks.
I'm fine with a +1 system that would've broken the PSU/Nebraska stalemate in '94, Michigan/Nebraska in '97, USC/Auburn in '04... but I don't really want to see them go to a March Madness style tournament.

And what I forgot to say in that first post is that under the current system, the 1994 and 1997 stalemates would have been broken. My +1 system is only relevant for the USC/Auburn situation in 2004...

I don't think that the logistical problem would be that tough at all. GGB said it, play through December with a 16 team tournament, making some of the bowl games into playoff games.
Oh, and what happend to Manningham? I read that he is out for this week.

I am sure that Miami and FSU would be all about that, it's not like the kids go to any classes and/or ones that have finals anyway, plus most of their fathers are in jail, but allow some breathing room for schools that kids actually graduate from and/or like to be home for at least a little bit of the Holidays.

There is no excuse for not having a playoff. Every other college football division has one. You'd really rather watch two 7-5 teams play a meaningless bowl game than have 4 weeks of playoffs? It could ABSOLUTLEY be done, but it won't be for one reason: $$$$$. Too much money being made off of crappy bowl games played in 1/2 full stadiums by crappy 5th place in the conference teams. Boooo.

"Every other college football division has one"
This is always the worst rationalization for a playoff. Comparing any Division of college football to D-I when it comes to scope, logistics, media passes, hotel rooms, selling tickets, security, broadcast logistics, etc, etc, etc, is like comparing the ability to consume Rumple Mintz of Munchdaddy to Glenn.

The NFL can do it. I don't see how it's all that different, honestly.

Man, you just don't get it. It's not that hard to shuttle 12 member of the girl's tennis team off to Athens, GA so that nobody watches them try to win the Team Title. Nor is it that hard to run the boy's soccer team out to Bloomington, IN. Try moving everyone around for these HUGE games, with LOTS of people involved and a HUGE National Media presence.

GGB, I agree that it would not be easy but it could absolutely be done. Logistics is NOT the reason there is no playoffs.
