It sounds like a good deal in theory because no one could believe Floyd was going to turn it around and Gio was slated as a reliever, if I'm not mistaken.

Also, let's not forget the key...Garcia was in Seattle for most of his career.

Andy Reid is to BYU as Gillick is to the Mariners. Hope you're not listed, Bret Boone!

Welcome, Jay Buhner and Edgar Martinez.

FAG could be Ok, but that dude is volatile.

True. Sounds like Padilla all over again in terms of personality.

I'm sort of surprised they didn't insist on an extension...

Gio was slated to be a starter, and a very good one at that.

However, he just had a shaky year at AA (although young for the league), and who knows how long it would take for him to be ready here. Floyd's last chance was last year, and he failed.

At the very least, the Phils got a guy who is still only 30 and at worst is slightly above league average as a pitcher. The best thing: he always pitches over 200 innings, which means less starts by the Floyd/Brito/My neighbor contingent.

BTW, I hadn't heard of Garcia being a crazy guy. What's the story

i'd take my chances with your neighbor over floyd.

i think garcia supposedly failed a drug test last year before the WBC, as far as controvery.

Then he would have been suspended

he tested postive for marijuana, for which there is no penalty in MLB.

Oh, I'm pretty sure 99% of the league does that.

If there's no policy, why do they test for it?

Never mind, reading too fast.

Baseball does have a policy regarding marijuana, though.

MLB didnt, it was the international baseball federation (or whatever its called). it came out during the WBC, but then he was allowed to pitch (there's supposed to be a two-year suspension from international play if you test positive for pot).

i dont know, it's really a non-issue, but it was the only thing that came to mind regarding any possible controvery about the guy.

MLB absolutely has a policy. Didn't the NBA catch hell a couple years back for being the only one withOUT a Marijuana policy/ban?

Oh, and did I hear correctly that Manuel was seen/quoted prancing around the clubhouse gushing "WE GOT OUR ACE!!! WE GOT OUR ACE!!".

Um. No. You got Freddy Ankar Garcia. A #3 or 4 SP in a good rotation.

He was in Florida with Gillick, so maybe in their joint hotel room (Gillick's way of saving a little money)

MLB prohibits marijuana, but doesn't test for it, whatever that means.

It's tested for, just not randomly. It's on a basis of reasonable cause, going back 12 months. So there is a policy and there is punishment.

I can't find much on weed and MLB, but everything I can find says it's prohibited, but not tested for at least once per year. It almost sounds like they don't test for it, but have left the door open to testing for it.

The Garcia violation was in the IBAF league and I think it happened around the same time as the World Baseball classic, if that hasn't been mentioned yet.
