Small side-note:
Seems that talks between Mats and the Red Sox are breaking down, with a deadline of Thursday to sign him or else he goes back to Japan.
The reasoning?
The Sox believe that Boras is too stubborn and is disinterested in getting a deal made, because he hasn't gotten over the flaws in the Japanese "posting" system.
Um, yeah. I'll bet another $10 million will make all that go away.

That's only 1 of a few options available right

I saw some junk on a Mets site that MLB could decide the Red Sox are not negotiating in good faith with Matsuzaka, and award his rights to the Mets who had the second-highest bid.
Sounds absurd, just curious if that's an option you heard.

Yeah, Selig could rule on that. Also, Boras could buy him out of his contract and make it back right away with the new contract.

So if the Phillies trade Lieber for bullpen help, who's the guy they call up in case a starter gets hurt?
Did I hear they want to make Castro a starter?
I just hope it isn't Madson. Is there someone in triple A I'm forgetting about other than Brito?

I swear it's impossible to scoop KB on baseball. I was just coming out to post the same thing. Supposedly, Matz, Boras, and the Red Sox Cru is on the way back to Boston to do the physical.

Seems like a fair price.
Considering the cost of FA pitchers, this isn't a bad total contract (including the money they ponied up at the start).
He could flop, but his actual salary wouldn't be that hard to move if things go south.

It's not bad at all, especially considering the money they'll make off merchandise in Japan, alone.

A) The Mets pay it.
and
B) He is a bust.

I think Zito won a Gold Glove once, so he won't be a Tiger...
I could go either way on the Mets signing him.

I've never liked Zito and word was Boras was going to use whatever he got from the Sox (plus the buyout) as the framework for Zito (which was why he was holding him out).
If anyone gives Zito 6 years, $100 million...well...they'd have to be nuts. In this market it wouldn't shock me, though.

Zak, I think f-d actually loves Zito. The problem is, once f-d likes a pitcher, the guy winds up on the DL. This is f-d's way of avoiding the jinx.
