So the new X-boxes are okay reliability-wise? Cheaper price and more games...Hmmmm.
We'll see.

Yeah, it's a new chipset in there. You can get the Elite, also, which also has the new chipset, 120 gig hard drive, and is $479

I meant compared to the "used to be but no longer" close to 100% the PS3 was touting before they got stupid.

And F_B, if you get a 360, get Psychonauts for the Xbox1. It's also a great game with tons of humor.

Yeah, like I said, the failure rate is with the old xbox. New one is good.
All this talk made me finally order my coffin box.
Funny thing is I went to the support FAQ page and I've experienced all 3 of the major malfunctions.
TRIFECTA!

I had every issue you could think up. The new Xbox's may be reliable, but I've owned a lot of pieces of technology and game systems...the Xbox 360 was (by far) the biggest piece of shit I've ever owned.

Ahother great part for the PS3, is that you can ALWAYS upgrade your hard drive.
I bought a 60gig PS3, but I also upgraded my laptop hardrive, so I took my 120GB hard drive from my laptop and installed it in the PS3 for all my music and pics. Changing the hard drive does void the PS3 warranty, they encourage it, to keep your system up to date.
THe hard drive is not a Sony exclusive either. It's the same hard drive from your laptop, that you can buy anywhere.
Either way FB, the PS3 and the 360 will give you great games, KB is right in that the 360 has more games today, but I would google the two systems game line ups for the next six months and see what peaks your interest.
TO learn everything you need to know about the PS3 hardware, network, downloads and games go to
www.us.playstation.com and click the "forum" button.

It's amazing, I've played like 15 games, probably, and have taken up less than a gig of hard drive space on my Xbox. I didn't need to get the Elite (but this way I didn't have to worry about the old glitches).
The media aspect isn't important for me. I have all my music on my ipod, so i just plug that into my stereo when I need to hear music. I plug my laptop into my TV if I need to watch something. All this can be either streamed onto the Xbox or put on the hard drive, though, so if media is important, you'll want to think about the Elite. You can get the 20 gig hard drive now, and just switch in the 120 later, if you want, though.

And if you don't have an mp3 player, your Elite connects to Microsoft's Zune.

FB, I also think it depends on what type of games you like to play. Games on the Xbox tend to be more arcade like (Halo, Project Gotham) in that you can pick them up quickly and play them. PS3 games tend to be more strategic (Socom, Gran Turismo) and will take a bit longer to master, but will probably give a more fulfilling experience in the end.
I wouldn't worry about the backwards compatibility, because once you play games on the PS3, I don't think you'd ever go back to the PS2 games. It'd be like watching standard definition television when there's a high def feed available. I've also noticed hiccups in the PS2 games when played on the PS3 due to the joystick changing to USB.
Lastly, the PS3 is simply more powerful than the Xbox, and over time as programmers learn to take advantage of all the horsepower, this difference will become quite noticeable.

The whole "more powerful" thing is completely up in the air. Some developers are coming out in support of Xbox, some in support of PS3.
Also, both systems have games you can pick up right away (Heavenly Sword for PS3 is the easiest game ever, and considered one of their blockbuster games) and ones that are harder (Ghost Recon 2 has some in depth stuff to it).
I wouldn't classify either has being easier than the other, b/c they share many of the same games, with the exclusives being better or worse versions of each other (Gears of War, Resistance:Fall of Man)

Hardware-wise, there is no debate. The PS3 beats the Xbox hands down.

But a lot of game developers have no idea how to utilize all the beefcake under the PS3 shell which makes the point moot. I think Xbox blows PS3 away just on number of games. Maybe that will change in ohhhhh 2 years but what good is that doing me now?

Developers eventually learn the intricacies of programming the individual systems. Whether one wishes to wait for that time period to pass is a choice left up to the individual.

Not the way the power is divided up. Take a look at the side by side specs. Until the developers learn how to use the cell properly, it's not more powerful.
As a result, Sony had to beg one of the developers to keep making games for them, b/c it wasn't cost-efficient to hire so many people to try and work on them.
The problem is, game developers are having to hire whole teams to work on one aspect of a game for PS3, while they could have a couple doing the same thing on the other systems. Sony just had to beg a developer to continue to make games for them, b/c it has become such a hassle.

sarge, that's the point I was making earlier. You can wait on the SOny now, since there aren't that many exclusives out for them, and when/if developers figure it out, there will have been another price drop(s) by then.
Another thing to consider is that many of the games out for both systems are better on Xbox. A lot of times it's been ported from the Xbox onto PS3. This is why Orange Box is a couple months behind on PS3, and why Madden didn't look as good.

And developers really aren't a big fan of the different architectures the 3 consoles have, which makes it a pain taking advantage of a system's particular abilities.
The Sega Saturn was, in some ways, more powerful than the original PlayStation, but it was also a pain to program for. As a result, more and more developers went the cost effective route, and the PS1 buried it.
Cell is more powerful, but most of the games have not shown the technological advantage the PS3 boasts. Some have looked downright horrible, actually.
