I actually read an article that claimed movie studios will eventually sell movies with HD DVD format on one side of the disk and Blu Ray on the other side of the disk, thus making this whole debate obsolete
wow, that's a surprise and I'm not sure how they could/would be able to do that though; the injection molding that is used to produce CD/DVD's are huge and they would actually have to combine two machines, and althouh we had a machine that was able to produce the double sided discs, I thought the technology was too different to be able to combine. I guess being away from it for a year a lot changes...
and the TV is an RCA, I'll have to look into making sure everything is hooked up correctly, I've heard people say they see the diff the way it's set up now but to me the picture on the set is great to begin with so adding HD to me almost seemed like overkill. I'll have to do the unthinkable, pull out the owners man..

FD, surprised you haven't played online. Online play REALLY makes the whole experience of console gaming worth it, IMO. I usually take a couple of weeks to get familiar with the game so I don't suck so bad online. Inevitably, there is a lot of schooling that I undergo when you make the switch from u vs puter to u vs douche bag 13 year old cheaters. I imagine that is what it is like going pro in football.

Attention fellow gamers/nerds.....lol
I just bought my PS3...gotta say I love it. Picked up MLB the Show, pretty cool game. I think there is an issue with its online server, but should be fixed today or tomorrow. The 1.8 update should come out today, which I believe will allow you to upscale regular DVD's and PS2 game....SO I've heard.

It should - I've heard the same thing that the firmware will correct the issue.
Glad you like your purchase. I'm still in between the Wii360.

I got too busy with the move and never ended up doing anything with it.
I think I'm just going to buy a new one at Wal-Mart or something and return the broken one.
I'm sure I'll get busted on it, but that's an old-school trick for "repairing" video game consoles.

FD - you could get busted doing that, since they're doing better at tracking these things. Of course, it's Wal-Mart, so whatever.
If you feel like taking matters into your own hands, this page can help you. At the very least, you may be able to recoup your loss or get it repaired.

That's my play...I figure they'll know exactly what I did at some point in teh process, but why would Wal-Mart come after me for a couple hundred bucks they can recoup by sending back the machine anyway (since Microsoft has bigger fish to fry)?

I just bought the package that included the hard drive and one wireless controller. You need to buy the "rapid charger" for the controller (about $15 or $20) unless you want to use batteries and then you're set to start playing.
If you want to do the online gaming stuff you just need to hook it up to your network.

M$ gets its kicks out of frying goldfish like you.

At this point, if you're going to do it, then do it right and get the Elite - it has an HDMI port and comes with HDMI cables (the PS3 doesn't). You could probably pick up some deal where someone will throw in another 360 controller (if you need it), but the HD size of the Elite is 120GB, which should get you well on your way to downloading stuff. XBL comes with the purchase (at least for a year), I think.
It's retailing at about $500, but you could probably get some bones knocked off of that if you wait for a bit.
I'm leaning towards a 360, but the breakdown issues (even though M$'s tech support has been stellar) keep me from dropping $400+ on the machine. Maybe they fixed the issues with the Elite, who knows?

The other thing is don't buy a 360 and decide you want to get an Elite, since transferring stuff from the old HD to the new one is about as painless as chewing on broken glass.

DONT buy HDMI cables at the store! Go to monoprice.com. I got 2 HDMI gold plated cords for under $6.00, total. A high end optical cord for $10 and a HDMI switcher for $30.
The great thing about HDMI, is its all or nothing. You either get the great picture or you don't. Not like component cables of the past. The only time you need a 24 guage HDMI cord is if you are running it more than 20-25 feet. Save your money.

In the future...
I'm going to buy a PS3. It's a bit more but it seems they built it right the first time and includes a wireless network card. It's controllers are already rechargeable, 100% of their online service is free. Blah blah. If you can swing it, get the PS3. If price is a concern, get the Wii! The Elite is the newer, more-futureproofed X360, so def get that if you want MS.
Sony loyalty? Maybe. I've had the most fun with my PS2 this year since GTA: San Andreas came out. I like Sony's track history of supporting their consoles long after purchase and GREAT games are STILL coming out for the PS2. I don't want to be abandoned by Microsoft like they did with the original Xbox owners.
I don't want to dick around, I'm only going to buy a new console one time that needs to be fun for years, so why go with the short term solutions of the Wii (which is a juiced GameCube) and X360? I guess due to happy experiences with Sony, I'm a fanboy or something. When my PS2 stopped playing CD-based games years after I got it, they sent me a refurb /w a new controller. Maybe that was court ordered or to head off a lawsuit or something, but it was still good to get from them.

Sony did have a class-action lawsuit leveled against them, because a large amount of PS2s broke down, so they either had to pay a very large sum or offer to fix the PS2s for free. They chose the latter.
As bad as the 360 is, the PS2 takes the cake as far as broken consoles.
I'm not too much worried about cost, but someone was saying that part of the reason why the Wii is doing so well is because it's priced closer to what most people expect from a console, and it's a ton of fun.
I'm gonna wait until at least Christmas - Mrs. Bass doesn't take too kindly into my gaming habit.

Wow, a PS3 commercial!
In any event, a couple of those things are misnomers - specifically the XBL purchase (but you absolutely need that for downloads and movies and such), and the HD-DVD drive isn't something you need (or that M$ is even pushing), since they're touting more of the downloads/On-Demand stuff as the future.
Still, I really like the PS3 being able to upscale old games into true 1080i. And it seemingly has better reliability issues than the 360.
You are correct that, in the long run, you'll pay more for the 360 if you want everything (specifically all the downloads), but that cost doesn't beat you in the head all at once.
My buddy has a PS3, but he's barely played it since he got it (Fight Night, he says, is mind-blowing). I just wish they had better games out for it right now.
