f-d always makes some good posts on a wide variety of topics, and I know he's into electronics.
Anyway, for Christmanukah this year, the old lady and I are having problems deciding what to get each other. We decided to get a new TV, since ours is pretty old.
I'm just curious about where is a good place to do research. What's the deal with LCD/Plasma? Is rear-projection a kind of LCD, or is it Plasma, too? We're starting from scratch here, as a new TV has never been a high priority for us before.
I appreciate any light you can shed on this.

F-dallas,
How much is the apporpriate amount to drink at the office holiday party?
Is it two drinks or as many as you want as long as you are not the drunkest person there?
Thanks

Went throught this about a yr ago. Haven't posted since.
Rear Projection:
DLP or LCD. Biggest bang for buck. I have 55" Sony LCD and love it. Had DLP first but exchanged.
Flat Panel:
Plasma or LCD. LCD getting bigger, but still go up to only 42" or so. Some bigger ones may have come out. Plasma ultimately best picture and has larger screen options, but reliability has been a question. I assume that's getting better too.
Qnet is a good place for research. I found Consumer Reports outdated.
Best bet, pick a name brand and you'll be happy. They're all pretty sweet.

F-dallas,
If you know someone is Christian should you say "Merry Christmas"? And if you know someone is Jewish should you say "Happy Hannukah"? Or should you just say "Happy Holidays" to everyone?
And how many people nationwide actually celebrate Kwaanza? Is it more than a Baker's dozen? I say no.
Thanks

A fine layer of TP (so you don't clog it, don't use too much) and pinch off a loaf. Just don't jettison it like a escape pod on an exploding space ship.

I'll address EAG first. You're just bi-curious.
On the TVs, I'll give the most concise info I can. We've had a couple of these types of threads over the years and they've always been helpful.
Plasma
- They seem to have the most potential in the long run, but there are issues. They are typically the most expensive, have a questionable lifespan, and picture quality degrades over time (gets dimmer).
LCD
- Considered projection, but they are true "flat panel" TVs that can hang on a wall. It's a proven technology and I have a lot friends who have LCD TVs they've had for some time and they are still thrilled.
- The main failure in an LCD is the light bulb. They are expensive (most are just under $200), but they last quite a while and that's really chump change compared to the cost of the TV.
- Biggest drawback was always the ability to show true black and the dreaded "screen door" effect (picture could sometimes look like you were watching it through a screen door thanks to the pixilation). The ability to show dark black and contrast in dark movies still isn't great, but it's much better and probably won't bother anyone anyway. I think the screen door effect has been largely eliminated as the quality has improved based on what I've seen with my own eyes.
DLP
- Flat screen, projection, not a true flat panel. It's light, but is about 10 inches deep, which means you'll need some kind of TV stand and won't ever be able to hang it on a wall.
- It's a completely different technology ("It's the mirrors") powered by a powerful processor, millions of tiny mirrors, and an expensive light bulb. Like the LCD, the light bulb needs to be replaced if it fails (every 3 or 4 years, they say but it's based on estimated hours of use), but it does dark black better than an LCD.
My opinion is you should be choosing between LCD and DLP and if that's the case, the main issues at hand are:
- Resolution ability.
- Brand.
- Built in tuner (yes or no).
Most everything else is fluff you likely shouldn't care about becasue "3LCD technology", "Cinemotion", and the other "features" they put next to their TV are impossible to quantify. The best judge is your eyes...look at the different models on HD feeds and compare. THAT SAID, don't go by your eyes only because they screw with the settings on the floor TVs to make them brighter, add contract, etc. Birhgter might appear "better" when you are lookign at a floor model, so just use your eyes ae part of the judgement (IMO).
For the built in HD tuner, I wouldn't kick it out of bed, but I don't think it's worth the money. If you are going to hook it up to cable, you're going to need an HD Tuner from the cable company to get most of the HD channels anyway, so the tuner is redundant and the expense unjustifiable.
For the brand name, I think Sony appears to be the leader of LCD TVs and Samsung seems to have cornered the market on quality DLP. Everyone I know who has a Samsumg DLP has been happy (and that includes me). Everyone I know who has a Sony LCD has been very happy as well. You'll likely spend a little bit more (apples to apples) for the Sony, but it isn't drastic. To me, if you want to save $200 and don't care if you can hang it on a wall, go with a Samsung DLP. If you feel more comfortable with the Sony name, don't think a couple hundred $ matter given the size of the investment, and might want to hang it on a wall, go with the Sony LCD (Samsung makes a lot of LCDs, but I can'tspeak to the quality).
Any other brand is a crapshoot...I just haven't heard much good or bad about them, but I know everyone and their mother makes an LCD TV. The big thing with brand to me is the expected durability. The picture quality on a 1080P LCD is going to be pretty close across the board, but will the Olivia hold up over the next several years? I think that's the biggest reason to stay with a known brand.
The resolution you should be looking at is between 720P and 1080p. Don't worry about all the other numbers (specicially 1080i).
1080p is the best HD capability out there. 720P is the second best and still very good. You'll pay siginificantly more for 1080p and the picture truly is amazing. If you've never seen 720P, you'll thionk THAT picture is amazing and spend less money.
This is a judgment and budget call for you. I have a 720p DLP and love it. 1080p is pretty amazing, though, and I'd have to consider it if I was buying a TV today. The biggest difference (my perception) is as the TV gets bigger. A 40 inch or 42 inch is going to look great on 720P, but if you get a 60 inch, you'll see a difference with the 1080P. You can get 12 inches away from them and they still look amazing.
As always:
- Consider the size of your room...don't go too big.
- Factor quality cables into your budget (HMDI, about $90 each for decent/good ones. You'll want one for HD Cable and one for your DVD Player if you go with teh up-convert unit).
- Standard TV looks just okay on an HDTV (quality might actually be a little worse than your TV now) even though they improve the HDTV's ability to handle standard TV all the time. With that said, make sure you're going to take advantage of the TV with as much HD programming as you can get your hands on because it will not improve your viewing experience on your standard channel and it's likely to make those channels look worse.
- Know that DVD's won't look great on it. If you purchase an HD Up-Convert DVD player, it will improve the picture quite a bit and make it look very good, but it won't be HD quality.
I think that's about it for the basic stuff.

F-dallas,
What is the rules for dating someone who used to date a friend? Do you need approval from the friend or sshould you just do it and let him find out on his own?
(anyone can answer these if F-d is busy)

Depending on how long the someone was dating your friend, it is generally considered good form to let your friend know and seek approval. HOWEVER, if your friend is still dating the someone and you decide to bang the someone, DO NOT seek approval. I cannot stress this enough.

You should use the friend as a resource.
Let's call your friend "Bob" and his Ex (the one you'd like to date) "Susie" in the reenactment below:
EAG: Hey Bob...I heard around the way that bitch Susie had the clap wicked bad. You should get checked out.
Bob: You're a great friend, EAG. I can;t believe that bitch, but I'll get checked out and let you know how it goes.
See, in the scenario above, you've not only successfully made sure he won't care if you date "Susie" in the future, you should also get a econd hand opinion of her potential vaginal health.
It's called a "win-win".
