I guess this can be answered by F-d or anyone else that has a good idea of what to do.
When I bought my house, the survey said that about 5' of backyard was fenced off by my neighbors. It turns out my neighbors didn't build the fence, but the owners before them did it. In order to restore the proper part of the lot back to me, she let me know she was moving and asked what I wanted to do about it.
It requires refencing AND removing several plants. I'm not sure who should pay for what. I offered to split the costs of the fence, but would I be the sucker if I split the costs of plant relocation?

That's a tough one and I have no clue...really cool of the neighbor to offer paying even half of the fence moving. Could you move the plants yourself?
If I was in their shoes with the exact same situation, I'd probably let you reclaim the yard, but on your own dime.

That's just it, I didn't want to be a dick and tell them I keep the plants or they pay for moving them.

Now that I'm thinking about a little bit, it was always yours so I guess you were doing them a favor by not taking a bulldozer to the back 5' of their yard.
I still have no clue what the proper thing to do is.

based on what i know from 1st year property, there isn't always a black and white solution to these kinds of problems, particularly when fence has been up for so long; it can create adverse possession, meaning that the neighbor may have legal right to use that 5' of land even though it's technically yours. that would mean the neighbor may not be legally liable to pay to take the fence down. do you know how long the current neighbor has lived there?
(as it happens, i have a real estate class in an hour. i'll try and ask the professor.)

You should still practice though and send him an invoice for a few minutes of thinking about it.
Say, bill out at the generous rate of $125/hour for a Snake in Training.

Why is everyone saying "an historic election"? Shouldn't it be "a historic election"? McCain started it, and now Bush is doing the same thing.
"An" only precedes a word that starts with a vowel, and unless you live in the East End of London or are starring in your local community theater's production of Oliver!, you need to pronounce your "h's."

maybe b/c it's referring to the election, which starts with a vowel. I've heard it done with other adjectives in between that and the subject

'... Dropping Aitches Everywhere...'
Charles Everest notes that NPR reporters and newsreaders regularly misuse the aspirate "h."
Please let all of your reporters, commentators etc. know that words that start with H are not prefaced with an, as in "an historic setting" or "an historic event". The only H words that use "an" are: an hour, an herb (only in the American pronunciation) and an honor etc.... A historic, a history, a hysterical, etc. are correct. Almost every announcer on NPR and WUNC says "an historical" etc.
It really grates on my nerves, and it is not correct use of the language or common parlance.
Mr. Everest's complaint underscores the fact that a spoken language is, as mentioned, a dynamic process, and language does change over time. Checking a number of reference guides and one reference librarian, here's what I found:
The use of "an historic" is in fact, not technically incorrect but is now considered archaic and pedantic. According to Fowler's Dictionary of English Usage:
A is used before all consonants except silent 'h' (a history, an hour); an was formerly usual before an unaccented syllable beginning with h (an historical work), but now that the h in such words is pronounced, the distinction has become pedantic, and a historical should be said and written...
NPR's reference librarian uses a more journalistic source to back Mr. Everest's concern. According to Kee Malesky:
The AP Stylebook 2005 agrees:
Use the article a before consonant sounds: a historic event...
(As we discussed, this is just a personal affectation. It should be discouraged.)

I'm not F-D, but I'll offer advice.
My wife and I decided at the beginning - no anniversary gifts. Instead, we alternate years (I have odd #'s, her even) and we go to a REALLY nice restaurant and then do whatever else we want after. On odd# years I plan/make arrangements, even #'s she does. On big ones (5, now 10) we go away for a long weekend.
It's worked out great so far (just hit 10 years) and there's never the pressure of figuring out what to buy or upping the ante from the previous year. Still do flowers obviously.
