Beckham to play for the Galaxy for 250 Million for FIVE years. Holy shit, how do they have that kind of money to toss around? And why are they stupid enough to think anyone will care about soccer even with Beckham here? I would make a comment about his wife but Carmella's presence in our very own city makes her null and void.

Who wants to bet 25 bucks that he goes back to UK soccer before the 5 years is up once he realizes that nobody here cares about him or his soccer ball.

For $50 million per year, I'd probably tough it out.
In fact, for $50 million per year, I'd eat acorns out of bear shit.

The reality is, he's only coming here because his European career is virtually over. He had already stepped down from the England National Team this summer and is very much in the twilight of his career.
This move is almost identical to the NASL bringing Pele to the NY Cosmos in the 70's. Just like that league, the MLS owns the teams so they're the ones who placed him in L.A. (probably his own Hollywood lifestyle aspirations as well).
As for the $$, I'd be curious to see the contract. Wonder if it's like an NFL contract where much of it will never be seen.

I wonder about the contract a smidge as well. Deferred money and/or if there is some ownership of the team that might slowly get ceded to him? Are U.S. Soccer teams owned or does the league own them?

ESPN radio says a "large part" of the money is in expected endorsement deals.
That actually makes sense since youth soccer by far dwarfs all other youth sports in participation and if Adidas or Nike can use him to be THE dominant shoe and gear source it could be worth a ton of dough.

But this was true when I was young (born in '79), and soccer is still a C-list sport here

Grounds for Grounding, IMO. Whine for a new set of Pings before you whine for new f'ing soccer(fag) cleats.
Oh, and what does that do for the MLS again? Why didn't Adidas or Nike just sign him to a deal?

Since it's the MLS, it could double the amount of people that see some games there

Plus, it'll be Adidas brand Beckham jersies, plus the team gets money from everything sold with him and their likeness on it. They'll get some coin out of it

I know some people connected to the MLS merchandising business. Basically, the LA Galaxy owns Beckham (and all of his rights) for the next 5 years. So, unlike the NFL or MLB, if he wants to get paid for his likeness, it will go through the MLS. They've, in effect, become his agent.
Pepsi, you want a commercial, pay the MLS.
McDonald's, you want a Happy Meal promotion, pay the MLS.
Actually, kind of similar to WWE in that regard. Whenever "The Rock" appears in a movie, the WWE gets a cut.
Already, they have booked an MLS Asia "goodwill" tour, and Beckham is huge there.
I don't know if this will catapult the MLS into the spotlight as a true American spectator sport (in fact, I doubt it will), but it will pay for itself on the financial side.

Apparently, MLS is only on the hook for $400k per year. The rest is a nebulous figure tied to endorsements. None of which have been inked yet.
I still doubt it will have any effect on America's indifference toward soccer. We ignored Pele, for God's sake. And to paraphrase Lloyd Benson, "I have seen Pele play, he was an idol of mine. You, Sir, are no Pele".

So, I just wanted to check in and find out what everyone did for David Beckham's official signing day this afternoon.
I took off early and killed a hobo.

In my view there are stages of homelessness and the guy I killed was definitely a train-hopping hobo.
- Tramp
- Drifter
- Hobo
- Homeless
Also, I happened across this in Wikipedia and found it hysterical:
The National Hobo Convention is held on the second weekend of every August in the town of Britt, Iowa, organized by the local Chamber of Commerce. The National Hobo Convention is the largest gathering of hobos, rail-riders, and tramps, who gather to celebrate the American traveling worker.
Parade
Traditionally there has been a parade on the Saturday at 10:00 a.m., where everyone can let their hobo spirit soar as they participate in the parade. A phrase that describes the parade is, "Some in rags, some in tags, some in velvet gowns".
According to the Chamber of Commerce: "Whether you're part of this large grand parade, or a spectator, the spirit of the day is sure to capture your mood. Marching bands, queens, business floats, children, adults, and hobos all come down the streets in one long line and share the fun that only a Hobo Convention can provide."
Other events
Other events during Hobo weekend include a 5K & 10K Walk/Run, Hobo King & Queen coronation, Hobo Museum, Hobo Auction, Hobo Memorial Service, Flea Market, Sunday Outdoor Church Service, Classic Car Show and various musical entertainment. The Hobo Jungle is open to the public.

One of the best movies ever had Lee Marvin as a hobo trying to ride Ernest Borgnine's train without getting thrown off. I place Lee Marvin in third right behind Clint and Chuck Norris.
