I don't know all the details, but apparently there were 2 armed men shooting up the Hokie campus. The first report was there was 1 person dead and several wounded, but the updated report is "at least 20 dead". Pretty fucked up stuff...

NN) -- The Virginia Tech Police Chief said at least 20 people were killed in twin shootings on the Blacksburg campus Monday morning.

"Some victims were shot in a classroom," Chief Wendell Flinchum said, adding that the gunman was dead.

President Charles Steger called the shootings "a tragedy of monumental proportions."

A hospital spokeswoman told The Associated Press that 17 Virginia Tech students were being treated for gunshot wounds and other injuries. Sharon Honaker at the Carilion New River Valley Medical Center told CNN that four patients had been transported there, one in critical condition.

One person was killed and others were wounded at multiple locations inside a dormitory about 7:15 a.m., Flinchum said. Two hours later, another shooting at Norris Hall, an engineering building, resulted in multiple casualties, the university reported. (Watch police, ambulances hustle to the scene Video)

The first reported shooting occurred at West Ambler Johnston Hall, a co-ed dormitory that houses 895 students. The dormitory, one of the largest residence halls on the 2,600-acre campus, is located near the drill field and stadium.

Amie Steele, editor-in-chief of the campus newspaper, said one of her reporters at the dormitory reported "mass chaos."

The reporter said there were "lots of students running around, going crazy, and the police officers were trying to settle everyone down and keep everything under control," according to Steele.

Kristyn Heiser said she was in class about 9:30 a.m. when she and her classmates saw about six gun-wielding police officers run by a window.

"We were like, 'What's going on?' Because this definitely is a quaint town where stuff doesn't really happen. It's pretty boring here," said Heiser during a phone interview as she sat on her classroom floor.

Student Matt Waldron said he did not hear the gunshots because he was listening to music, but he heard police sirens and saw officers hiding behind trees with their guns drawn.

"They told us to get out of there so we ran across the drill field as quick as we could," he said.

Waldron described the scene on campus as "mayhem." (Watch a student's recording of police responding to loud bangs Video)

"It was kind of scary," he said. "These two kids I guess had panicked and jumped out of the top story window and the one kid broke his ankle and the other girl was not in good shape just lying on the ground."

Madison Van Duyne said she and her classmates in a media writing class were on "lockdown" in their classrooms. They were huddled in the middle of the classroom, writing stories about the shootings and posting them online.

The university is updating its 26,000 students through e-mails, and an Internet webcam is broadcasting live pictures of the campus.

The shootings came three days after a bomb threat Friday forced the cancellation of classes in three buildings, WDBJ in Roanoke reported. Also, the 100,000-square-foot Torgersen Hall was evacuated April 2 after police received a written bomb threat, The Roanoke Times reported.

After the Monday shootings, students were instructed to stay indoors and away from windows, police at the university said.

"A gunman is loose on campus. Stay in buildings until further notice. Stay away from all windows," read a warning from the university.

"Virginia Tech has canceled all classes. Those on campus are asked to remain where they are, lock their doors and stay away from windows. Persons off campus are asked not to come to campus," a statement on the university Web site said.

That is awful. I have heard that they think it was 1 shooter. I find it hard to believe that 1 guy could take out over 20 people and injur antoher 20.

And it was early morning, too.

OK, so there were about 40 people shot in total (so far, living & dead). Whoever it was shot up the dorm and then left to shoot up the Engineering building? TWO hours later? With no security or whatever else around?

Something's rotten in Denmark (sorry fagel).

If Hollywood has taught me anything, Nova, is that anything's possible when you have slo-mo cameras.

Still, it's hard to believe one person could've done all of this in the span of over 2 hours.

You'd think classes would have been cancelled by then.

Wow, BirdsFan, that is totally jacked up.

They still have Hardees around?

Still, if the call went out and the cops took 2 hours to get out there....Lawsuit City.

From the VT prez:

Now here are some of the facts as we know them. At about 7:15 this morning, a 911 call came to the university police department concerning an event in West Ambler Johnston Hall. There were multiple shooting victims. While in the process of investigating, about two hours later, the university received reports of a shooting in Norris Hall. The police immediately responded.

So no mention was made of the first shooting? No cancellation of classes? Not even a "be careful; something's going down"?

Messed up, on all levels.

More streaming reports -

Fox says that the # of dead is 32; CNN says 21.

Guy was a "heavily armed Asian male" who was supposably looking for his gf. They say he was responsible for the 1st shooting, hid out when they locked down the campus, and went loose again after they lifted the lockdown and got to the 2nd building, shooting people execution-style.

That's incredible.

Here's the front page of Fox News - 32 dead, 28 wounded, all by one man, supposably.

Insane.

this is sickening, from what I've just heard it's 32 but that number will most likely go up because of the number of critical injured... ok the guy is dead but it wasn't slow enough you kill that many people they should hurt you to the point of death, then get you medical attention get you back to health and then do it over and over again.

Apparently the guy shot a few people in the dorm then left, mixed into the campus croud went over to a one of the halls TWO hours later and then chained doors shut and started killing that is where the majority of carnage was committed...

I know it won't turn out this way but I really hope it was some sort of terrorist and not just some dumb kid that got dumped by his girlfriend or failed a mid-term... at least that kind of insanity I could handle...

OK, this isn't the true timeline, but from what people are saying:

At 7am, the guy goes shooting in a dorm; one person dies, couple others injured.

Cops come in; dorm's on lockdown.

The university sends out emails to people saying a shooting occurred (though the "gunman still being on the loose" part I don't think was added). Students are told they can continue on to classes and to proceed with caution. Lockdown lifted as police investigate.

Second shooting in Engineering Hall; has the most fatalities as people are shot execution-style. Gunman is killed when existing police arrive.

Again - insane.

Nikolas Macko was in a mathematics class in Norris Hall when they heard a series of loud bangs in the hallway which prompted a female student sitting near the door to move to close it.

"She peeked out into the hallway, and saw the shooter, so she immediately closed the door. Three other students moved a table that was in front of the room - it seats approximately 40 students at capacity - and barricaded it against the door.

"A few seconds later, the shooter tried to open the door, but my classmates kept it well shut, as they held the table against it from floor level.

"The shooter shot the door twice at chest level, which resulted in two holes in the door, one of which hit the podium in the front of the class room and the other continued out the window. At this point he reloaded, shot the door again - this shot did not penetrate - and moved on to the other classrooms," Mr Macko added.

That's fucking intense. This whole event is the type of thing that if I saw it in a movie, I'd shrug it off as being too implausible. Truth is stranger than fiction, indeed.

I'm watching the press conference from VT, and they said the first shooting in the morning was a domestic issue, and believed the shooter had left the building, and the probably the state. So, they still allowed classes to go on thinking the first issue was over. They are not looking for a suspect at this time, but they seem to be leading the press that the two shootings are seperate issues. Kind of strange, but it does make why they allowed class to go on.

Even if it was a domestic issue, IMS, how could they really let classes go on if they knew a shooter was on the loose? And even beyond that, how could they think that he would just up and leave?

I know it makes more sense if the two shootings are unrelated (which makes the situation even more f'd up). I almost wonder if they're trying to lead the press in that direction so that they don't realize the scope of the f'd up-ness.

Regardless, this is just sad on so many levels.
