Bass,
I'm in no way defending them for allowing class to go on, but there must have been SOMETHING, to make them think it was safe. God I hope so. If not, thats 30 more people dead than needed be.

VT President said this morning that they had about 15,000 students enroute to after the first shooting. They thought it would be better to direct the students into the classrooms and lock them down, rather than having several thousand students wandering around campus. I kind of understand the logic, but it backfired big time. They ended up trapping students in that building. The whole thing is just surreal.

I'm not saying you're defending anything, IMS. I'm more aggravated that something like this could happen.
If that's true, slap, then I feel a lot worse now. Seems that he was targeting someone in particular in that German class, since he was said to have looked in the class a couple of times before he started shooting.
Maybe there's a method to his madness.

Locking the place down was the right call, in my opinion. Letting people just wander around while an armed assailant picks them off is only going to lead to chaos, panic, and probably way more than 32 deaths.
I was wandering around Penn State when that Gillian chick was picking people off on the HUB lawn, and it got pretty crazy pretty fast, and that only lasted minutes.

A doctor at a Blacksburg hospital described the injuries he saw Monday as "amazing" and the shooter as "brutal."
"There wasn't a shooting victim that didn't have less than three bullet wounds in them," said Dr. Joseph Cacioppo of Montgomery Regional Hospital.

We'll never really know for sure, but when that many people die, it's nihilism to an absurd extreme. The victims were probably anonymous in the eyes of the shooter and killed simply because they were living. To me, that's a different kind of scary.

I don't think anyone is saying that locking down was the wrong move. It's removing the lockdown while the gunman is still at large thst's the problem.

To be perfectly honest, I'm kinda shocked something like this hasn't already happened.
Whenever there is some kind of incident like this (rampage shooting), I'm always shocked by the lack of body count. I know that sounds grim, but I remember the Columbine incident and was thinking "with all that firepower and the complete lack of any type of resistance, how did they only manage to kill 12 people".
Obviously the lower the number the better, but I'm almost surprised something like this hasn't happened before.

I'm still surprised at how many shots this cat unloaded. Everyone wounded or dead has no less than 3 shots in them - that's at least 138 rounds fired.
This nut was pumping out ammo at a ridiculous rate. Had no care in the world for who got killed.
One sad thing is that a professor died while trying to prevent the nut from entering the classroom. His diversion allowed students in the classroom the time to escape out of the window.

This whole thing is awful - still, between Dino's Vick comment and bassiladelph's use of the word "supposably" this thread is setting a new high water mark for comedy around here.

I'm with F-D. Rolling into a packed high school and only offing 10 people (other than themselves) is a David Bell-esque sluggging percentage. Even this cat yesterday was somewhat pedestrian, maybe a Geoff Jenkins type. When Pujols or Miguel Cabrera step up to the plate, LOOK OUT.

I was thinking yesterday, the way most, if not all parents found out had to have been by way of cell phone silence. If 2 hours or so after the event you had not heard from your son/daughter, you had to think that the best case scenario was critically injured, cause there is no way anybody would have given official notification in that time frame, and there is no way somewhat NOT involved would not have let their parents know they are Ok by then.

I'm waiting for that now... How video game violence somehow contributed to this.
I know after I win yet another Madded Super Bowl with the Eagles... I then go outside and parade down my street.

The boys in Columbine would have killed hundreds if the bombs they planted had actually detonated as planned. The bombs were powerful enough to destroy half the school.

i usually feel the same way, but in this case, i feel the opposite - i am amazed at the the amount of people this guy was able to kill with only 2 relatively low-caliber hand guns. when i reports of the number of dead and wounded first started coming in yesterday, i assumed this dude was packing multiple automatic weapons.
to uber's point, based on the weapons, i disagree that there would have been more dead had the students not been in classes. stuck in classrooms, these kids (and faculty) were fish in a barrel. if the killer would have been able to kill this many people with only two handguns at his disposal in an open setting, he would make any tarantino character look tame.

Anyone see that video on CNN of the bald chick who claims that she was in the classroom where everyone got shot? She shows no emotion at all - pretty bizarre stuff
