I don't think I'd make a move if I were Gillick either. See what Durbin and Kendrick can do and what happens when Myers gets back. As Section pointed out, the task is rather daunting even if you do make a move.

http://www.philly.com/dailynews/sports/20070724_Bill_Conlin___Phils_know_how_to_pick_em__all_right.html
There are reasons to believe Drabek already was damaged goods when he reported to the Phillies' rookie short-season club in the Gulf Coast League. The GCL is the launching pad for young Latinos and extended- spring-training athletes. They are joined by high-school draft picks and lower-level college selections. The GCL and equivalent Arizona Rookie League represent the first plantings of the professional baseball food chain.
I asked myself a couple of times when it became apparent Kyle was at the top of the Phillies' draft wish list, "Who is the idiot letting a kid with an arm like this play shortstop on days when he doesn't pitch?" Kyle was doing it 9 months a year.
Once again, the Phillies have learned the hard way that not all million-dollar arms are created equal. Some require an immediate medical exam to determine why 98 mph smoke has pulled back to the haze of 88 to 90. And, oh yes . . . Young pitchers lie about how their arms really feel. They lie all the time. That's why keen professional judgment becomes vital.
This is just another PERFECT example why the Phillies Organization S U C K S.

Also another good reason for why, in a radio interview the day the Phils drafted him, Drabek and his old man were both CLEARLY drunk as coots.

it really is fucking amazing. the phillies have now apparently brought in three pitchers in the last year and a half that probably/definitely came in with injuries - their closer (gordon), their potential staff ace (garcia) and now their number 1 draft pick from a year ago (drabek).
how is it possible that such critical acquisitions were not more thoroughly examined - when all three came in either with injury historys or, in the case of garcia and drabek, drastically diminished velocity?
at what point is someone held accountable? ugh.

This isn't Phillies news but I thought I'd put it in here instead of starting another thread.

Bell to discuss relationship with Giants slugger in November issue

She doesn't look that hot. Definitely airbrush material.

U skipped a couple paragraphs there Section but I guess the point is made. I love when Conlin makes statements like this, though:
"I asked myself a couple of times when it became apparent Kyle was at the top of the Phillies' draft wish list, "Who is the idiot letting a kid with an arm like this play shortstop on days when he doesn't pitch?" Kyle was doing it 9 months a year."
Sure you did, Bill sure you did. I am guessing he is not on the Phils Christmas card list.

I hear they're interested in Josh Towers, which Ken Rosenthal (bluntly) said on CSN this morning was a waste of time because he's no different from Durbin/Kendrick.

I don't think I'd make a move if I were Gillick either.
Neither do I.
It will be a little embarrassing, however, if they do make the playoffs and the game 2 starter is Adam Eaton.

Me and a few friends will be at the Phils game Saturday against the BucOs.
If anyone would like to stop by for a cold lager you are more than welcome.
We will probably get to the lot around 5:30.

i'm all for bringing in someone who is a sure # 2 or 3 pitcher on most teams. but joe kennedy and josh towers are imo, no better than kendrick and the real deal.
plus, you would have to give up a decent prospect to get them, and how the hell are we ever gonna know if the guys currently on the roster can pitch if we dont keep running them out there.

I'm assuming they'd be looking at Kennedy for bullpen help, but you never know.
Garland and Vazquez look like the prizes this year but Gillick should be banned from trading with the ChiSox.

SZR.. you may be right about kennedy. i only know he's mediocre.
do we really need to give up a decent prospect when the bullpen looks to be improving with the addition of gordon and myers possibly this friday.
add to that madson who looks to be back to the form from 2 yrs ago, alfonseca is pitching pretty well lately, and romero has been a pleasant surprise. i've also read that geary may have his mechanics worked out and be ready to re-join by mid-august. if you recall, he was lights out at the end of last yr when he was on.
so how many innings would any reliever added really garner, and at what price ?
right now, anything more than a throw-in doesnt seem worth the price.

EEB, I think you spoke too soon about Alfonseca.
This is absolutely brutal that Condrey has to bat with the bases loaded.

By the way, the guy running the Yahoo Sports Rumors section really deserves a raise. He's figured out that you can mention anyone's whim regarding a Philly athlete, and everyone will click on the story. Here's the latest:
Twins target Wiggy, Pat the Bat
Wednesday, Jul 25, 2007 5:44 pm EDT
It's no secret the Minnesota Twins are interested in Tampa Bay Devil Rays infielder Ty Wigginton. The New York Mets and New York Yankees also are interested in Wigginton, who can play first, second and third and has some pop.
The Philadelphia Phillies might set club records for offense this season, but they badly need pitching. Pat Burrell (.249, 12 home runs and 46 RBI) could be available, but he's making over $13 million this season and Philadelphia would have to eat most of that salary.
Source: Minneapolis Star-Tribune
Notice how's there's no discussion of why the Twins would ever want Burrell.

actually the rest of the bullpen was pretty darned good. kudos especially to condrey and romero. thought that ump was squeezing romero a bit, and he still got the job done.
i wouldnt mind another reliever. but why give up a prospect for some other team's cast-off. the last two nights proves the phils bullpen can get it done. add a healthy brett myers and it should only be better.

Can get it done? Against the Nationals? After they blew the win in the top of the 9th and had to rely on a comedy classic to win?
Brett Myers does make them better, and I hope that Cholly doesn't run the Alfonseca/Madsen-Gordon-Myers group into the ground.

Ran into NEAG at the game last night.
Having Rowand bunt there is one of the worst calls of the year.

Absolutely! UNREAL! I was fuming, and then of course, "Sarge" suggests that AR chose to do it on his own....
Ahno.
He looked pissed when he returned to the dugout, shakin his head as if to say "WTF is this old badger doin?"

Rowand didn't see them call the sign off. They wanted AR to show bunt on the first pitch, then to swing. I don't think he looked down the 3rd base line.

KB, were any of the 3 minor leaguers the Brewers gave up to get Linebrink highly rated prospects?

The one guy was #37 on the projectprospect.com list to start the year and remains around there, I think. Not overpowering but could be a solid MLB'er. Other guys are kinda workman-like types but all could contribute, though perhaps not be All-star caliber types.
Are you guys talking about Rowand bunting in the 10th? I did not watch the game, I was watching the Motown circus.

Actually, here is what MLBTraderumor.com had to say about them, after a lenghty discussion on how Linebrink's value has tumbled a good bit this year:
"Inman is very young for Double A; put him in PETCO in 2009 and I don't see why he can't keep his ERA under 5. Doesn't blow you away but innings eaters are fetching $8MM annually these days. Great move by Kevin Towers, because he won't miss Linebrink. He can't lose.
Didn't know much about the other two prospects. Thatcher is a 25 year-old southpaw reliever, another guy with average stuff. The results have been excellent through Triple A though. He's got a cut fastball, sweeping slider, and fine control. He was ranked 23rd among Brewers prospects by Baseball America.
Garrison is a 21 year-old southpaw starter, ranked 27th on the Brewers' list. He's working in High A currently. He too has average stuff without great velocity, another command guy. See a theme here? The pitchers plucked by Kevin Towers don't light up radar guns or make scouts drool, but still look like big league contributors.
You have to give this one to Towers, who traded from a position of strength to snag three pitchers known less for projection than probability."
