NBA ref bets on games

I'd say this is bad news for the NBA, but some people think the refs are on the take anyway.

Does anyone find this surprising?

Stern on radio and tv now. This is bad and explains some of the games I lost money on.

One talking head was saying that the league moves on from this (if it's just one guy, like the league is trying to paint). But that doesn't fly well because:
1) If the NBA keeps such meticulous accounts of all calls and non-calls, why didn't someone notice this sooner?
2) How did Stern not know about it, if the league has such a great record of checks and balances?
3) Why even toss out a ref with a gambling problem, if they knew that he could become a potential liability?

So now, just about every NBA ref's calls (justified or otherwise) have come into question (if only by the general populous). Shoot, even Tim Duncan's questionable tossing last year could, in theory, be tossed into that general perception and not into a guy having it out for another guy (which is bad enough by itself).

The first game that came to my mind was the miracle (read: BULLSHIT) shot Derek Fisher made at the end of the game against the Spurs in the playoffs about 4 years back.

I don't think Donaghy called that game, though.

from the inquirer today:

There are reports that Donaghy is not only going to flip on his mob buddies - which will make that little spat with his neighbors a few years ago seem like backyard badminton - but he's allegedly got the goods on some other refs and some players as well. None of that has been substantiated, and the FBI will take its sweet time in sorting it out.

so now there are allegedly players and other refs involved? if that's true, this thing is going to go from a nightmare for the NBA to the apocalypse.

I think there's always at least some little bit of wagering going on in sports by people closest to the action, but none of it was revealed b/c of the hit the sport would take.

This makes me wonder why this particular official was zeroed in on, unless the FBI thinks they can use this guy to nab an even bigger fish, and the NBA is just a side issue.

But if he does have dirt on other refs making bets...regardless of if those refs officiated the games they bet on, it will turn very, VERY nasty.

And it's not like it takes much for people to hate on the NBA these days, anyway.

And it's not like it takes much for people to hate on the NBA these days, anyway, given the nature of many of it's athletes.
