Very interesting opening weekend to the new college football season.
First of all, LSU and WVU looked really good. I would not be shocked if they finished the season 1-2 and matched up in the nat'l champ game.
Louisville hardly skipped a beat and Brian Brohm clearly made the right choice to stay for his senior season--he is a top 5 pick in next year's NFL draft. The choice to stay probably earned him 10 million more in his rookie contract than if he left after last year.
Notre Dame looked like total garbage yesterday. I doubt that they will win more than 5 games this year. They have alot of young talent and better days are ahead for this team, but this is a rebuilding project for the fat man.
The Tennessee/ Cal game looked more like an NBA game than a football game. Cal can get away with that in the run-and-gun Pac-10, but if Tennessee wants to get to a bowl game this year, they need to find a defense and find it soon.
Speaking of the SEC, they are so far and away the best football conference in the nation, it isn't even funny. Put a team like USC or Texas in that conference and they are probably a 2 or 3 loss team most years. Even Kentucky should be decent this year.
PSU looked pretty good, but I think the final score is a little deceiving. PSU's D forced alot of turnovers and generally looked pretty good. Morelli looked OK throwing the ball, but the run game has got to get alot better or else they will finish 4th in the Big-10, staring down an Alamo Bowl birth.
Speaking of the Big-10, Wisconsin sure looks like the team to beat right now. They have a ton of returning players on a very talented defensive unit and PJ Hill reminds me alot of Ron Dayne when he played there. I still think that they are a 1 or 2 loss team, but in this year's version of the Big-10, that might be enough.
The Michigan game was one of the most unbelievable games I have ever seen. When Hart scored that TD and App State turned it over on the very next possession, I was convinced that UM had survived an unexpected scare. Anyone who knows me, knows that I am no fan of UM football, but even I was a little dissapointed with their performance. For a team that looked like the best in the conference, they certainly shouldn't have lost their first game, let alone to a 1-AA team. Even if they beat Ohio State this year, there is zero chance that Lloyd Carr is employed in Ann Arbor next year. At the very least, the ST coach should be collecting unemployment right now. I just wonder how far UM falls in the next polls? I can't think of any scenario that would keep them in the top 25.
I guess this is why College Football is so entertaining...

Even if they beat Ohio State this year, there is zero chance that Lloyd Carr is employed in Ann Arbor next year.
And in the long run-- that one fact may prove to show that yesterday was, ultimately, a blessing in disguise. Anything short of running the table, winning the Big 10 in dominant fashion and a bowl game victory will likely result in a massive overhaul in Ann Arbor-- not only in terms of the coaching staff, but in personnel and recruiting philosophy as well.
It's just a shame it had to come at the expense of perhaps the most talented offense in Michigan history.
Nationally, I am impressed with the Pac-10 as a conference. Cal's offense scored at will on a "vaunted" SEC defense, USC remains a machine, UCLA has a defense that may be one of the best in the nation, and Oregon has plenty of talent of both sides of the ball (they're coming to Ann Arbor to pick over the carcass this week.)
I think the West Virginia-Louisville matchup may be the most entertaining CFB game this season. I'm not much for making pre-season predictions, but I can absolutely see its winner in New Orleans on January 7.

How good is LSU?
They absolutely manhandled VaTech in every aspect of the game.
PSU's 31-10 win over ND was one of the lamest ass-whoopings I have seen in quite some time. Penn State's D looked very good, but that was against a freshman QB and a very poor O-Line. The question is whether or not they can do that against Wisconsin or Ohio State.
Anthony Morelli really need to make better decisions with the football. The interception that was returned for a TD was virtually telegraphed...if he doesn't get better, the best this team can finish is 3rd in the Big 10.
I've got to give props to the Big East. I blasted them the entire off season as being a fake conference full of one-dimensional teams that would lose to top tier competition. What South Florida did was impressive and certainly gives that conference some major creditibility.
ENY, GGB---what is going on in Ann Arbor? I thought for sure that they would come out on Saturday and destroy Oregon. This is just wierd.

I think the word we are looking for here is, "Antiquity". Fortunately, this little streak might help to bring it to an end. Stay close to your cell phones Mr. Tedford and Miles...

Yeah, the train wrecks of these last two weeks have been a long time in coming, though I give credit to those who foresaw it happening in so... drastic a manner. As I said to some friends yesterday, I think what Penn State went through at the beginning of this decade may be what Michigan has to look forward to these last few years of the decade. There's little question that Carr is gone after this year--I just wish I had more faith that he'll be adequately replaced. Tedford turned down the Chicago Bears a couple years ago, and Les Miles would have to be bat-shit crazy to leave what he's got down in Baton Rouge.

Herbstreit said during the game on saturday night, that after talking to him, he believes that Miles would leave for Michigan.
What I don't get, is the fact that UM seems to have consistently good recruiting classes. The diff between UM now vs PSU 4-5 years ago, is that PSU was really struggling to pull in blue chip recruits. That doesn't really seem to be the problem @ UM.
With the talent that they have (namely on offense) I am baffled by the past 2 weeks. With Hart, Henne, Manningham, Long, etc., they should easily put up 24 points in ANY game.
On the defensive side of the ball, they lost so many players to the NFL, it is really hard to win when you have that many young guys starting--I actually give them some slack.
Oh btw, I actually think UM will still beat PSU this year, regardless of what their record is 2 weeks from now--they just seem to have PSU's number. I hope I'm wrong...

OU just might dominate this year. Seriously. They are looking mighty strong. Granted, they've blown the last few bowl games, but you know.
On an even bigger note, I just can't see anyone stopping USC. They were just messing with Idaho. Their running backs are all underclassmen and all studs. The defense is wicked.
Hopefully LSU will drop at least one and OU has to get by OSU. It's not texas that Sooners fans are worried about. It's always the in-state bs that causes heartache.

I meant to bring this up on Saturday, but is Paterno the only head coach in Division 1 who doesn't wear a headset? Does he have ANY say over what happens during the course of a game, or is it true he is merely a figurehead at this stage of his career? Just something I noticed in the ND game...

Rivalry gone bad
Longhorns fan nearly castrated in bloody bar scuffle
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/football/ncaa/09/11/oklahoma.texas.fight.ap/index.html?cnn=yes
Thomas told police that when he decided to leave and went to the bar to pay his tab, Beckett grabbed him in the crotch, pulled him to the ground and wouldn't let go, even as bar patrons tried to break it up. When the two men were separated, Thomas looked down and realized the extent of his injuries.
"He could see both of his testicles hanging on the outside of his body," said Thomas' attorney, Carl Hughes. "He was wearing a pair of white shorts, which made it that much worse."
It took more than 60 stitches to close the wound, and police interviewed Thomas at a nearby hospital emergency room.
Take that Giants jersey off or I'm going to rip your nuts out!!!

Man did Temple get screwed. What's the point of having instant replay if they're not going to correct an obviously wrong call??

They were absolutely hosed. Watched the end of that after bailing on the alma mater fumblin away a chance to beat Mich. St.
I thought it was so clear, I went in the other room only to hear the call announced. Shocked.
Poor MIG- saw the IM pop up from him stating "Temple got SCREWED!" and I replied, never heard from him again.
hope he hasnt done anything rash.
How bad is Notre Dame by the way?
This is great.
I threw a Wolverine/Buckeye parlay in today along with Blue straight to the line.

I am absolutely sick over this Temple thing. Just watched it again on the news. Just so wrong. If ever a team needed a win... and to be so completely and obviously fucked by clearly incompetant officiating. Just ain't right.

Temple did get ripped off.
Notre Dame is beyond bad...the fat man doesn't look like such a genius now does he? 10 year contract extension? Please.
I am looking forward to the PSU/Michigan game. I hope I am wrong, but I think Michigan wins again...
BTW Seth, LeShaun McCoy looked really good, he could turn out to be a special player.

Notre Dame is beyond bad. Probably the worst team I have seen Michigan line up against in 10 years or maybe a whole lot longer. Michigan/PSU will be close.

Who is going to start for Michigan? Henne or Mallet?
I think Mallet has the chance to be pretty good a year or two down the road, but right now Henne would give PSU more problems than the freshman.
I see Mike Hart as the key for UM. PSU's D is pretty good against the run, so whichever team wins that battle will most likely win the game.
PSU's O scares me a bit. Morelli is inconsistent, the playcalling is archaic and they have a hard time figuring out how to get the ball into their playmaker's hands. Also, Austin Scott has looked shaky, tallying up 3 lost fumbles already. They need to play Kinlaw more, let Royster sniff the field and stop running reverses to Derrick Williams that haven't worked in 3 years.
I agree Glen, I think the game will be close, but even when UM has a down year, they find a way to beat PSU. I really don't think UM is as bad as they looked the first 2 games, and offensively, PSU will play right into UM's strength. There is a real potential to see a 13-10 type of defensive struggle.

Well, I think Michigan will put up at least 20 points, minimum, so PSU better be ready to at least score that many.
They are saying Henne is/may practice but I see Mallett starting this game. The boy has an Elway-esque cannon...

Long as you run the spread, you could put JoePa in at QB and it's at least 30 points.
