Russia builds 'most powerful bomb'
Channel One said that while the Russian bomb contains 7.8 tons of high explosives compared to more than 8 tons of explosives in the U.S. bomb, it's four times more powerful because it uses a new, highly efficient type of explosives that the report didn't identify.
While the U.S. bomb is equivalent to 11 tons of TNT, the Russian one is equivalent to 44 tons of regular explosives. The Russian weapon's blast radius is 990 feet, twice as big as that of the U.S. design, the report said.
"We have got a relatively cheap ordnance with a high strike power," Yuri Balyko, head of the Defense Ministry's institute in charge of weapons design, told Channel One.
Booming oil prices have allowed Russia to steadily increase military spending in recent years, and the Kremlin has taken a more assertive posture in global affairs.
Last month, President Vladimir Putin said he ordered the resumption of regular patrols of strategic bombers, which were suspended after the 1991 Soviet breakup.

These bastards just come right out and say "We got weapons of mass destruction"?
As an imminent threat to our national interests, I say we hit 'em now, and figure out the plan later.

The commies, as always, don't quite get it.
1. Because their simpleton populous is poor, they are susceptible to propaganda.
2. "Big" bombs make headlines and encourage the people with statements like "twice as large as the U.S. bomb".
3. 900 feet is still about 100 miles smaller than the blast radius of the nuclear fusion bombs in the 50's (big is relative).
4. The size of the bomb really isn't important at all...it's the ease of delivery, it's ability to avoid detection, and precision. The SCUD missile was another Soviet weapon that was hyped, but largely useless against a modern army.
The Russians do piss me off, though. If we really had any interest in harming them, we could have walked through their entire country and taken it over with Boy Scouts. Now, 20 years later, those clowns start saber rattling again. Someone needs to sit them down and slap their stupid Russian melons and tell them to knock it off.
I also believe time stopped in the late 80's for all Russians and the most popular attire is still sweatpants and a Members Only jacket.

Seth,
I realize that not everyone here in the US feels that the war in Iraq was unprovoked, but the commonly held belief around the world is that we are involved in a war of aggression. The US has also been attempting to privatize the resources of other countries for a long time (ie, we're trying to assume ownership of other country's oil, water, natural gas, minerals, even people). There are massive protests against us around the world multiple times per year.
I'm not saying that I care or that I disagree with American policy, but we've been pushing everyone else around for a long time and it's one of the reasons why the bulk of the world hates us all right now. And when we re-elected Bush the antipathy became directed at us as well as our government.

Nothing. In fact, things have finally swung around in their favor and their favorite Asia LP is now hip and ironic since they waited it all out.

Well, the reds (sic) may have nailed (sic) that one as well, or at least headed it off at the pass...
Moscow - A Russian region of Ulyanovsk has found a novel way to fight the nation's birth-rate crisis: It has declared Sept. 12 the Day of Conception and for the third year running is giving couples time off from work to procreate.
The hope is for a brood of babies exactly nine months later on Russia's national day. Couples who "give birth to a patriot" during the June 12 festivities win money, cars, refrigerators and other prizes.
Ulyanovsk, about 550 miles east of Moscow, has held similar contests since 2005. Since then, the number of competitors, and the number of babies born to them, has been on the rise.
Russia, with one-seventh of Earth's land surface, has just 141.4 million citizens, making it one of the most sparsely settled countries in the world. With a low birth rate and a high death rate, the population has been shrinking since the early 1990s.
In his state-of-the-nation address last year, President Vladimir Putin called the demographic crisis the most acute problem facing Russia and announced a broad effort to boost Russia's birth rate, including cash incentives to families that have more than one child.
Ulyanovsk Gov. Sergei Morozov has added an element of fun to the national campaign.
The 2007 grand prize went to Irina and Andrei Kartuzov, who received a UAZ-Patriot, a sport utility vehicle. Other contestants won video cameras, TVs, refrigerators and washing machines.

Isn't that kinda stupid? What happens in 9 months when all these babies are being born at the same time? Would the hospitals be able to handle them all? I say THAT'S when we hit 'em- 9 months from Sept. 12th. They'll have their hands so full with screaming, pooping babies that they won't know what hit 'em.

Because their simpleton populous is poor, they are susceptible to propaganda.
I think you are over-simplifying their situation. While they are part of the remnants of a nation that had long believed it was neck-and-neck with the U.S. for the title of global superpower, you can't ignore the fact that the Russian people are adamantly opposed to war. Losing over 10 million soldiers (and many, many more civilians) in World Warr II will kinda quench your thirst for war.

No, I agree with you. But the news of that dogshit bomb and it's comparison to U.S. bombs seemed aimed at letting their people know their military is gaining in it's might and is a world power.
It seems like it's the start of a slow propaganda assault designed to the country into the idea that they need to start asserting this power they've accumulated.
