I'm a little puzzled by the inclusion of one line in this story from the Inquirer:

NHL suspends Flyers’ Downie 20 games

By Tim Panaccio

Inquirer Staff Writer
As expected, the National Hockey League came down hard on Flyers forward Steve Downie, suspending him 20 regular-season games for a blatantly illegal head shot to the Senators' Dean McAmmond during Tuesday's 4-2 loss in Ottawa.

This ties for the fourth longest suspension in NHL history.

The league has been saying for months it would crack down on "head hunting," and during pre-season players in every NHL city were shown videos of what constituted illegal head shots and warned of the consequences.

Colin Campbell, the league's "Lord of Discipline" who serves as director of hockey operations, made his ruling from Toronto where Downie and Flyers' general manager Paul Holmgren were in attendance for sentencing.

"This issue was our angst over the summer," Campbell told the Inquirer. "People don't think we have been tough enough on head shots. We worked all summer with players and coaches and [general] managers. We showed them a video of 52 hits on what we're talking about. We showed the video again to every player in training cam.

"If you leave your feet, if you target an opponent's head, if you hit an unsuspecting, or target a player ... There is no doubt there was also intent here, as well. This hit contained all five criteria."

Seconds before he targeted McAmmond, Downie had been buried into the glass face-first by Ottawa's Chris Schubert. His reaction was to seek out a player and hit him. In this case, McAmmond. That constituted "intent," Campbell said.

Downie charged down the left boards, then glided behind the net, becoming airborne as he hit McAmmond, who had his head down. McAmmond, who was hospitalized, suffered a concussion.

To his credit, Downie phone McAmmond on Wednesday and apologized. McAmmond, who is a Christian, accepted.

Downie has a long history of incidents in junior hockey, most of which involve controlling his temper on the ice.

Anyone want to tell me how McAmmond's religion is relevant to the story.

Perhaps's Panaccio's earlier draft went something like this:

McAmmond, who is a Muslim, responded by sending a suicide bomber to blow up Downie's family.

or

McAmmond, who is Jewish, responded by suing Downie's ass, seizing his property and re-zoning his land to build an overpriced hi-rise condo.

McAmmond, who is a Rastafarian, shared a bonghit with Downie, and the two forgot about the entire incident..

McAmmond, who is a Buddhist, merely asked, "Why?" and then levitated into the atmosphere.

I can see your point Talon.

Maybe the Christianity theme goes with the whole apology accepted. Because he's a Christian, he's instructed to forgive.

Kinda like how I've forgiven you for telling me I've offered nothing to the level.

However, I'm not a Christian, and yet I've forgiven you for every minute of my life you've wasted with your pointless posts.

Sorry Fred, all the Christians have forgiven you, and they don't want to fight.

On the other hand, you might be able to get something started if you go to Hymietown.

The only reason to mention this is if Gary Bettman DIDN'T accept his apology and upheld the suspension.

And the only thing worse is the way they're fighting while he's still on the ice unconscious.

As a Christian, I will ask my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ why TheTalon was reading an article about preseason hockey.

Talon,
I have a feeling that McAmmond told either the press or a league official that part of the reason he accepted Downie's appology was part of his faith. Is it a little odd to put that in the paper, maybe, but I do think it part of his answer. Not just something the writer just threw in.

The more shocking thing is Boucher back in a Flyers sweater.

Was Dorsey Levens available?
