Yeah, maybe the Phils can add Pat Combs to the list, flesh

i was originally going to make a rick shue/kevin sefcik reference, but i realized that i didn't have to dig into the past to take a swipe at the state of dispair that is the phils farm system.

Come on, it's not that bad. It kept them in the pennant race this year, and there's still pitching down there.

do the phils have a single position player in the minors who projects as an everyday major leaguer?

greg golson?

Yeah, Cardenas is called a young Utley, Jaramillo could be a great every day defensive catcher, Brad Harman is playing great. Obviously, the strength is pitching, though. D'Arby Myers, as an 18 year old, looks great, too.

seems like there may be some talent in low minors, but very little that will be ready anytime soon.

how close is that catcher? though to be honest, a guy who projects as a "defensive" catcher doesn't rate too high on the excitement scale.

Then it's a good thing he's not the best prospect.

He just had a season in AAA. I'd guess he'd play some this year.

I'd be really happy with a catcher that could call a great game, although Ruiz really got better as the season went on and he got used to the 800 pitchers.

just checked out 'phuture phillies' and feel a little better about things.

this guy's a big fan of myers, too, and i didn't realize how good a season cardenas had (they mentioned possibly moving him to 3B?)

They're not sure about his arm strength yet. I guess they'll let him continue to get comfortable in the minors and go from there.

Just to be clear, I don't think they have the strongest minors or anything. I just don't think it's in a state of despair.

no, it clearly isn't terrible. looks like next year could be pretty interesting as some of the prospects move up to clearwater and AA.

like to see how close savory, carrasco, outman and carpenter are to being ready.

Gillick said that he'll consider the offseason a success if he can obtain a dependable starter and one reliever . . . and that re-signing J.C. Romero would count as the reliever.

If Myers were a FA he'd be the best starter on the market and they already have him. All this searching is nonsense. Nonsense, I tell ya!

Phillies got Lidge. Hopefully Myers back to rotation

i'm liking this move a lot, assuming it moves myers back into the rotation. starting free agent pitching is paper thin with schilling off the market, and is a terrible crapshoot even in a more robust market.

lidge seemed to put it together again during the second half of last year, and neither bourn and costanzo will ever be starter-quality guys, in my opinion. (costanzo has been described as a russell branyan-type and i think bourn is probably only a fourth outfielder on a good team). i like geary, but i can live without him.

well, the decision on myers has clearly been made:

Philadelphia intends to move Brett Myers, who had been the Phillies' closer, back into the starting rotation. Amaro called him his No. 2 starter behind Cole Hamels or possibly even a 1A.

"He was pretty excited about being on the mound when we clinched the division in the last game of the season and certainly did a fine job in that role," Amaro said. "He probably could thrive in that role certainly, but we felt like our best opportunity to improve our rotation was to get him back in there."

Interesting move...

Lidge is a complete wildcard, but he was better in the second half and can still dominate when he's on.

The 19 for 27 in save opportunities last year are ugly, but I want to say that of those blown saves came very early and he was pretty good once he reclaimed the role.

Anyone know his contract status?

His ERA was twice as high in the second half last year, and he was 19/24 in save opportunities in the second half.

He's a free agent after the year, I think.

I think they added the best arm they could have to the starting rotation, and Im willing to give Lidge the benefit of the doubt. I realize the struggles he's had, but i think this was kinda creative and standing here in November, I cant see as it was like it cost em much if anything.

Yeah...looks like my perception was off (I didn't really pay attention to how he played after the fantasy season was over).

He struggled at the start, was lights out for a coupe months, and hit some tough times again in September and August (13 saves and 5 blown saves in those two months).

I didn't track him in September, but he was on my fantasy team and his 8 saves + 1 win during that month skewed my perception a bit even though he was hitting some speed bumps.
