Southwest: Texas: F.B.I. Looking For Bias In Assault

The F.B.I. has joined the investigation of the beating of a mentally disabled black man in east Texas to determine if he was the victim of a hate crime. The man, Billy Ray Johnson, 42, suffered injuries to his brain and face and has been hospitalized since he was found on Sept. 28 beside a highway near Linden, about 40 miles southeast of Texarkana. Linden police say they believe Mr. Johnson was attacked by a group of white men who took him to a party and then assaulted him before abandoning him in a ditch.
