Someone asked me about the impetus behind being an Eagles fan. (like one must provide an explanation) It was a relatively literate friend who asked in all sincerity and without obvious malice.
I've understood for some time that continued loyalty seems curious to folks-who-are-not-Eagles-fans.
I thought of several authors whose words might better illuminate this discussion. Then again, I'm a sucker for morose poets, so it's not like it was a stretch.
I temporarily settled on Fyodor Ivanovich Tyutchev, probably because I have a special fondness for bleak, dead-Russian poetry.
Autumn Evening
There is a wistful charm, a tenderness,
Mysterious and soft, in autumn's even:
The trees in weird and brilliant garments dress,
The gory leaves to whispered talk are given;
Above the sad and orphaned earth the skies
Lie veiled and bleak, the sun's departure mourning,
And gusty winds with sudden anger rise,
Of pending storms the grim and chilly warning...
Fatigue, decline, and - over all - the worn
And wasting spirit's smile, doomed soon to vanish,
That lights a sufferer's face and that is born
Of modesty, the godlike pride of anguish.

I don't get it. Are you asking if anyone's a fan of dead writers?
The placement of the "?" in the thread title might be what's throwing me off the most.
Explain yo'self!

It's tough to get actual endorsements from dead writers, so I hypothetically assigned fan attributes to a long dead Russian poet. Because I felt like it.
rephrase: WHAT DEAD WRITERS, WERE THEY ALIVE & US CITIZENS, WOULD BE EAGLES FANS?
I have no bourbon in my office. They're all bitchy and tight-assed about that shit here.
This is more convoluted and pointless than Fantasy Football in what way?
frikkin' linear thinkers........

Ok, I had to read it again. I get it.
The bingo moment is leading up to the last line "the godlike pride of anguish". Very good.
For a minute or two I was totally bewildered.

I would go with Shakespeare, myself...
"Now is the winter of our discontent"
"Something is rotten in the state of Denmark"
"All that glisters is not gold"
