Based on the slop that was out there to be had in free agency, this looks like a pretty decent move. I have to stop believing GM's offseason rhetoric.
Lidge is a ? mentally, but let's be honest, so is Myers.
They still need a CF/RF and a couple more relievers.

Does this mean they could POSSIBLY have an offer for Rowand?
Just lookin at numbers... (Pat, Shane and Werth)

They said they want to retain Rowand and Werth.
THis move was great for payroll, too. They got a closer and top starter in this deal, basically, while only adding the closer.
Wade is such a dope. I'm 99% sure Lidge is a FA at the end of the year. At the trade deadline he would have been worth a lot, if he pitches anything like he did a in a couple months from last year.

Pretty much all Astros news outlets question his mental capacity for the role. Not saying they're right because I don't know for sure, just saying he's a ?.

Hasn't that always been the book on him?
I was always under that impression as well, so it must have come from somewhere (accurate or not).

I just read that whenever any pitcher struggles sometimes, and it's usually from some writer that's playing armchair psychiatrist. I'm always hesitant when I hear there's mental questions about a player.

Well, good sir, I wonder whether the fans have a better vantage point from their recliners in their homes than from the inside of the clubhouse!
I once had the honor - and it was indeed an honor - of sitting down for a breakfast scotch with Wilert "Robins" Robertson across the the street from Ebbets Field. During casual conversation, I introduced the question of psychiatry in baseball.
He refuse to answer that question, but before I knew what had happened, he produced a psychiatrist on the bar as if by magic and shot him with the Derringer he famously kept under his fedora.
Needless to say, there is a possibility of snow in Erie today.

Man, you should write a Mamma McNabb/Conlin script. Sort of a "Waiting for Godot" with the two of them.

It's true, though. Myers could have 2 good months pitching, and then he gives up a base hit after someone gets on, and people are like "What a head case".

I'm not disagreeing. I hadn't really thought of it but when a pitcher struggles, it normally gets blamed on:
- Mechanics/location
- Injury
- Mental status
The whole mental thing with Lidge just kinda seeped into my brain and I assumed it was fact. I remember a writer citing it last season as the reason Lidge was yanked from the closing role and inserted as a setup man. He immediately began flourishing once out of the closers role, but that could have simply been motivation for all I knew (being pissed off for getting demoted, so to speak).

I only see one month where he pitched well in 2006, and he still had 5 saves. That's one of the reasons I don't see it

He pitched really well in May, June, and July (May and June as a setup man).

His fragile mental state after the Pujols bomb and Podsednik game winner, obviously.

I just used that b/c it was his worst year.
July he had 6 save opportunities, so he was still closing some, and his worst month came when he was a reliever.
The year is up and down, doesn't matter what his role was at the time.

Zak, "his fragile mental state"? What happened to having a bad game? Is Trevor Hoffman in a fragile mental state b/c of the Colorado game?
I just find it hard to believe that someone is as successful as he is for so long, but is a mental time bomb waiting to happen.

If we're just picking random years out of a hat, why not use the most recent one, though?

I did use it in my followup post. I showed how one month you used, he was still closing, and his worst month of the year, he was a setup man.
Also, it's not picking random years. WHy pick a year he did great in? We have to use the year and a half he wasn't, which was 2006 and half of last year. He failed and did great in both roles, so I don't see that as evidence of anything.

Zak, "his fragile mental state"?
It was a joke. A satirical comment on the recent discussion.

Ah, the best offseason move the Phils can make every year is calling the Astros front office.

Again, I have nothing to go on for his mental status other than things that were written, but I would think if the inference was made in 2007, we should imply it for 2007, no?
I mean, he might have lost a little confidence after getting hit around last year and he developed a complex this year. Complete and utter speculation, but it's a reasonable scenario we've seen played out before.
