Motion Capture Movies

I just heard that Beowulf is a motion capture/performance capture movie.

I couldn't care less about that movie, but do adults really watch these things? I'm all for some animation comedy. Over the years I've watched The Simpsons, South Park, Family guy, etc. I'm also fine with good-old animation done with motion capture for kids (like Happy Feet), though it's obviously not the kind of thing I'd actually go out and pay to see.

However, these techniques they use to basically create an adult cartoon (Scannr Darkly, Beowulf, and Titan AE come to mind, though I'm sure there are more) are just sad to me.

Do grown ups really want to go see a cartoon that literally replaces the real actor for no purpose whatsoever other than it's a technology...so they must use it?

Are "growed-ups" the target audience for Beowulf?

damn

I am looking forward to it. Not necessarily for the cartooning, but I read the story in high school and enjoyed it. As far as the motion capture aspect- it's as lifelike an animation as your gonna get, with the benefits of the special effects that you can create thru animation. Truth is, it could have been done without the motion capture and instead CGI'd it to death.

Kinda. PG-13, so older teens and younger adults.

There just have never been any good major adult movies totally using Motion Capture. There have been a few japanese movies and anime using it but no American films I can think of. It may be good but I can't bring myself to pay 12 dollars to see it. I will probably wait for the DVD.

Wasn't there a video game based movie done in motion-capture? Can't remember which one it was though.

Average Male Teenage/Young Adult Moviegoer #1: Hey, you wanna see a movie tonight?

Average Male Teenage/Young Adult Moviegoer #2: Sure, what's playing?

#1: I don't know, I've seen a lot ads for this Beowulf movie lately. Looks pretty cool, man.

#2: OK sounds good. Can your mom drive us to theatre?

Did anybody here see "A Scanner Darkly"? I just remembered I have it at home right now in HD

I saw it. It's not a total misfire but it really lacked dramatic punch. The book is awesome, though.

I can understand why they went to animation with the Scramble Suit being such a key part of the story, which was definitely enhanced by the technique. I imagine that'd be pretty hard to pull off with live action.

Final Fantasy - The Spirits Within. I only remember it because the title was always followed by, "sucks so badly that you have to wonder who watches this tripe".

I see where you're coming from f-dallas, seems excessive and pointless. Another example is the Polar Express (another Zemeckis flick). Did we really need digital Tom Hanks look-a-like? Just use Tom Hanks.

The only advantage in my opinion is this will create seamless integration between live action and CGI by eliminating the live action all together.

The disadvantage is the characters still look artificial or like reanimated corpses. Which would be to their advantage if they used this method to do a Night of the Living Dead remake.

The other advantage for the geeks is full frontal digital nudity of Angelina Jolie.

F_B, if you liked Beowulf, read Grendel by John Gardner. Then if you like that, rent "Beowulf and Grendel".

Very cool.
