Gun Control Laws

Caught the story on Action News at 6 yesterday about Rendell's pleas for some gun control laws going for naught yesterday in Harrisburg. One bill that got rejected by the committee called for a limit on handgun purchases to one per month, the other that got shot down would have allowed for local towns and munipalities to make their own gun control laws that would supercede those of the state. And one that got tabled would require anyone who has a (hand?)gun that gets lost or stolen to report it to the police.

Here is the Story off the Action News Website

Now, on the face of it, this seems quite absurd. But before this beomes a Republican and NRA-bashing thread, keep in mind that this bill was defeated by a lot of Democrats (albeit rural ones) also. I thought there was an interesting quote in the video (you can click on it from the story) from "Todd Rock" of "Franklin County", I am just recalling from last night as I don't have sound here but it was something like "Sure Philly has guns, but they also have drug, a certain sub-culture, and perhaps they need a little bit of spirituality?". Someone can clean that quote up if they like but it kind of smacked of "FU, fix your own problems, Philly", and perhaps a bit of racism, I dunno.

But I DO come from the idea that people kill people and not guns. But these laws seem awful reasonable to me.

Here is the kicker, though. As you may know, Philly is getting a new Police Commisioner, that came from DC and apparently had a good bit of success curbing the gun violence there, possibly due to some tightening of gun laws. And what's happening now?

Well, the Supreme Court has decided to hear a challenge to those laws, filed by a number of plaintiffs, including one African American woman, who felt the laws inpuned on her ability to defend herself. And this is apparently the very first time the Court has been put itself in a position to specifically address the issue of whether the 2nd amendment gives private citizens the right to own firearms? Who knew?

Anyway, interesting stuff to me, feel free to discuss.

I think gun laws are racist against blacks. Blacks live in the worst neighborhoods, they should be able to buy a gun to defend their house and families.

That said, I don't think one gun a month is unreasonable. Nor do I think that a 3-5 day waiting period is unreasonable.

That said, I don't own a gun and never will.

I think the point of stricter gun laws is to cut the flow of handguns into the cities so that they harder to obtain for EVERYBODY. Including the criminals. You want to own shotguns or rifles to defend yourself IN YOUR HOME? No problem.
But it's much harder to carry and conceal shotguns and rifles in the commmision of crimes, so that's why handguns are singled out.

That's fine, but I think handguns are more effective for home defense.

I just can't quite figure out why someone would have a problem with any of the 3 laws that were shot down or tabled.

There's nothing in the world like a shotgun blast in the face.

Handguns are great for surprise attacks (concealment), shotguns stop people in close proximity (plus the intimidation factor).

Sorry, I think most people would think you're wrong there.

Handguns are more accurate though.

I can see why they didn't want to have different laws in different parts of the state. You'd have to check your gun at the door of the town, like the movie Unforgiven.

That's the only part of the laws I found slightly credible. Then again, there is some bureuacracy in these bills, so if you "only" allow one handgun purchase per month, then someone can "only" get 12 per year. I guess the tracking of that could be somewhat cumbersome and pointless.

The only one I could see a problem with is the second one. Potentially while transporting your gun legally in one town, you'd instantly become a criminal entering in another.

Handguns are more accurate though.

You're also more likely to miss, thereby raising the odds of harm to your family or pet Spot.

You know to some extent, the Civil Rights act works against blacks here. Seriously, if so many blacks think the problem lies with gun control laws, in theory we could pass laws that would just prohibit blacks from owning guns.

But something tells me that wouldn't fly.

Just watched it (again) two days ago.

"Handguns are more accurate though"

Not true. A spray of buckshot at close range, is a no way you can miss shot.

Plus, 70% of all hand gun wounds are not fatal. If someone comes in to my house to harm my family, Mr.12 gauge will not accept appoligies later.

As far as handguns, I'm not a big fan. They are not for hunting(not matter what some clown tries to argue). I would have NO problem with extremely tight gun controls on handguns. Limit not only the amount you can buy in a month, but how many you can own period. No need to have multiple handguns, if all you want is one for protection.

You want rifles or shotguns for hunting, no problem. They are extremely hard to conceal, but hand guns need tougher laws.

"The Simonov SKS is a Russian carbine developed in 1946. It is a gas operated, self-loading, semi-automatic rifle. The rifle is chambered for the 7.62 mm cartridge which it takes from a 10 round box magazine.

The SKS, (the SKS45), was designed by the famous Sergei Simonov. The Russian SKS were produced originally in the Tula Arsenel in 1949 through the mid 1950's. The soviets Army replaced the Mosin-Nagant bolt-action rifles with the SKS rifle. The SKS was eventually replaced by the AK-47 rifle (Avtomat Kaslashnikov).

The SKS is the basis for the famous AK weapon series. Kalishnikov borrowed many of the features of the SKS45 for the AK47 rifle."

This is the type of gun that maniac used to shoot up the mall in Omaha.

MERRY CHRISTMAS

NEWBURY, N.H. -- A woman was shot and killed after she and her husband fired guns at each other during a dispute, police said.

Investigators said they were called to the Dion residence on Mountain Road on Sunday afternoon. Gary Dion, 37, told police that shots had been fired at his home.

His wife, Karen Dion, 38, was found dead in the driveway.

Police said that the couple was involved in a dispute, and afterward, Karen Dion grabbed a shotgun and fired it at her husband. Gary Dion then retrieved his own firearm, and, after being confronted by his wife, who still had her shotgun, he shot and killed her, police said.

There have been no charges filed in connection with the shooting, but police said the investigation is ongoing.

Sweet. Thins the herd a smidge, and pays some bills for the funeral directors. Win/Win I'd say.
