I not only had one of those, I also had the Trailer that went with it that you could jump it over, and the thing he used to jump the Grand Canyon. I rocked.

And that makes you about the same age as me, F_B.

I remember getting two of those for one of my birthdays and kept both instead of taking one back.

Those cars/motorcycles with the strip you'd pull to wind them up were the coolest toys around.

he was an original to say the least...

Sarge I bet you almost wish you'd kept the 2nd in the package, some collector types pay big money for that stuff, especially now that he's dead...

On the man:
Perfect guy doing the perfect thing at the perfect time. In the midst of everything that sucked about America in the 70's, here comes a guy that captured the moment. He graduates from the state fair circuit to become a national phenomenon, and all the while he maintains his status as a hard living, womanizing, egotistical lout with a hard on for America.

Hell of a guy, and in this PC-laden era, the type of fella that would never come this way again.

On the toys:
With the age I was at when he was at his heyday, I pretty much was rapt with all things Evel. I had the bike (pictured above) and the "snake river canyon set" which was pretty much a small diorama-type thing. I also had the Kineval dragster which was based on the same type of hand crank launcher as the bike. I'm sorry to say that my Evel met his end at the wheel of said dragster one day when I launched him from the driveway into the street and directly into the path of a Nova. Man & machine were pretty much flattened into a horrible carnage of twisted plastic under the bias-ply whitewalls of an unsuspecting driver. He actually stopped after he hit Evel and offered me some condolences. I remember sheepishly responding and saying something like "that's OK, my Uncle Freddy can fix it"...needless to say, the damage was beyond Uncle Freddy's scope.

My Snake River Canyon Set died in the vast wasteland of the front ditch of 3861 Wedgewood Drive, Birmingham, MI.

They showed Evel's last interview this morning (he was being interviewed by the magician David Blaine). Even on his deathbed, he was feisty as all hell.

Full disclosure, a cadaver appears "feisty" next to David Blaine.

Yeah, and in an another amazing feat- the number of hot babes just itching to get David "Lord of the Undead" Blaine's shorts down. I should have gone into magic.

His performance inspired the Simpsons episode where Bart tries to jump Springfield Gorge. At least he's left his mark.

He had some of the best interviews ever. I remember someone interviewing him 10-15 years ago asking him why he does what he does. No long explanation. Just a look of disgust and blasted "For the Money." Then got up and left.

RIP to a true original.

Yeah, the Smash Up Derby ones where the parts went flying everywhere ruled. I think they were called STP cars, or something like that.

I got way more joy out of those cars/sets than the money would bring me now.

my Uncle Freddy can fix it

NTFF!

I had the standard Evel motorcycle. I also had the van that you could park the cycle in the back.

My greatest feat with the Evel Knievel motorcycle is when I revved it up on the railing of our deck and it traveled 15 feet along this 4 inch wide plank to smash my brother in the face.

He didn't believe it could be done, so he laid his head on the railing and underestimated the speed of the motorcycle.

Lightning in a bottle that day boys.

Thans for the laugh, Johnson. Now I have something to look forward to with my boys.

I just hope it's not as bad as a neihgbor family I knew who had 11 boys (no girls). I'm sure the Drs at the ER knew their Mom by her first name.
