So, I'm looking for advice or experiences here.
I have a dog who's normally very friendly, but we had some friends over to watch the playoff games Sunday and one of their dogs and my dog got into a pretty intense fight.
We were right there and were able to break it up pretty quickly, but I guess I'm just a little confused on my next course of action.
My experience with other dogs has always been to basically ignore it and say "boys will be boys", but I wanted to put a little more thought into it this time and ask if anyone else has been in this situation before and what their thoughts were.
Also, do you think this is just something that happens, or a personality trait coming on as the dog "matures"?

I think it was the other dog. He's very possessive of bones and he came over to steal it while my dog and the other dog were playing with it.
It escalated very quickly, though.

Did visiting dog wander near a toy or food dish of your dog?
Sex of both dogs please.
My dog has roughed up both the Mom in Law's Golden (I just packed her up and drove all the effin way home to DE and then went BACK to NJ for the remainder of my visit) and the former neighbors beagle.
I would like it noted that nobody sought any legal or other action- both were cool about it, and I am not an irresponible Akita owner.
She didnt break skin on the Golden, the beagle got treated to a grab, lift & shake.
But that dog was the biatch, the owner knew it and decided not to persue it if I didnt.
(um, what? But I said "OK" nontheless).
Apparently his dog had 2 bites against him already so another report of incident would land him on Death Row? That was his story but i thought that only would be applicable if your mutt chewed on a human.
Also, had a pit back in the day, she got a chunk outta a Shepherd's neck downashore but it was self defense.
My 10 yr old nephew was being chased by this dog, so Millie went after it and literally had a chunk out of it when the other dog ran away (I had to turn the hose on her to get her to let go- scary moment).
That owner didnt want any fuss either so Im thinking that among the dog community there's that whole "boys will be boys" Thing unless there's a death- which so far, nothing ive owned has been responsible for.

Went to edit my post (add on) and saw the answer FD supplied to my very 1st question.
Case closed.
(The beagle owner hated his dog, said soon after the incident he was hopin mine killed it, so I was surprised he was leery of reporting it 'for fear of another incident', but i was new to the neighborhood and maybe he had other issues with the potential for Johnny Law comin round)

My dog: female
Other dog: male
My dog was playing a third dog (play-fighting over a bone they'd been stealing from each other all day...also a female).
The male dog came over and reached in to take the bone. My dog went to grab it at the same time. male dog growled, they both locked eyes for a second, and male dog lunged out. They went at it for a total of probably 1 minutes while we were trying to separate them.

Your dog was right, its her turf and thats how Dogs do it.
His growl was viewed as an attempt by her more than likely as a threat to her being 'home dog' or more commonly known as "the alpha" of the situation.
Had there not been another female present this may not have gone the way it did.
Your female was doing that (fighting-standing her ground) as much for the benefit of the other female (females together quite often act as males in their trying to establish a pecking order/hierarchy within a given dynamic).
By standing firm and fighting- she clinched 'home field advantage' that day among the others in her 'pack' that day.

my view: dogs react to other dogs much differently than they do to humans, so i wouldn't worry too much about dog-on-dog fighting unless your dog was being particularly aggressive, which it doesn't sound like she was.

I should point out that I had a dog some time back I knew had only bad intentions around other dogs, but the thought briefly crossed my mind that maybe as my current dog was maturing there might be some changes happening.
I don't believe she instigated it, but I've seen her around a LOT of dogs and this was the first time I've seen anything like this. I just felt really guilty because the owners are really good friends and got to see the whole thing happen right in front of them.

Why did they bring their mutt to your house anyway? They were there to watch Football.
Having owned several dogs, I agree with Seth. To a dog, it's simple. My house, my rules. You pooch was just saying that loud & clear.

f-dallas, I've heard that story before...
Joe Banner was playing with Jeff Lurie (play-fighting over a nickel they'd been stealing from each other all day...also a dime).
T.O. came over and reached in to take the nickel. Joe Banner went to grab it at the same time. T.O. whined, they both locked eyes for a second, and T.O. lunged out. They went at it for a total of probably 1 minutes while Rosenhaus and Reid were trying to separate them.
Sorry to say... you're friend is gonna have to shop his dog's companionship to other dog owners.

What kind of dog go you have, f-d?
Our f'ing beagle wants to fight every damn dog he sees. Outside the house, outside the car, etc, etc. Terrible.
Makes me sometimes wish he had met up with the Cougar I saw on Christmas Eve behind my inlaws house, that he was of course barking at.

He can stay quiet, just NEVER around any other dog or animal.
And he might be the most co-dependent pet I've ever seen or heard of. Leave the room, he'll follow. Run an errand for an hour and he will flip the F out when he initally realizes he is being left alone and will treat you like you just served a tour of duty in Iraq when you get back, to the point of annoyance.
Oh, and don't leave him unattended or unleashed or he will run away.
Super.

That's mine to a tee, except he barked all the time. Also, he'd chew through screened windows and try and run away

Rott/Pit mutt, according to the shelter when we adopted her a couple years back.
She's definitely rott, but I think he pit bull was misdiagnosed. She's only 70 lbs. and I think they were just trying to explain her smaller size. Since the shelters are about 95% pit bulls, I think they assumed that was the only logical breed.

Add to The Beagle Experience:
Despite wanting to attack and fight every OTHER animal regardless of size, this dog is TERRIFIED of anything out of the ordinary, particularly sounds.
Thunderstorm? Panic, Whimper, and shake.
Fireworks going off? Panic, Whimper and shake.
Low Battery sound coming from Smoke alarms? Panic, Whimper, and shake.
But despite all that I adore the little guy.

The dogs look cute. Zak what beach is that that allows dogs? Or did you just sneak it on?
FD your dog reminds me of my cousins dog, who I loved.
We were never allowed to have dogs as kids because they made the house smell like a dog.

Margate Beach, NJ. Was living there last winter while my house was being worked on. You can bring dogs to the beach at any time during the offseason, and even during the summer as long as you exit the beach before 8 in the morning. Technically you're not supposed to but they don't enforce the laws.
