"and a check-fraud scam,"
I wonder how much of the sentence was for lying and how much was for the fraud.

Well apparently the sentance was for the steroids: ( http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,321945,00.html )
Seems pretty harsh to me... here's what the judge said at sentancing: "
"Athletes in society have an elevated status, they entertain, they inspire, and perhaps, most important, they serve as role models," Karas said U.S. District Judge Kenneth Karas said he gave her the maximum under her plea deal to send a message to athletes who have abused drugs and overlooked the values of "hard work, dedication, teamwork and sportsmanship."

I'd be pretty surprised if Bonds got a much worse sentence

I agree. That should be the standard, though (if the sentence was indeed based on the roids and not the fraud).
