Richard Pryor was a standup legend. One of the best- I'm going top 3 of ALL TIME.
Not only that, but his style influenced other comedians. Eddie Murphy's standup act was taken right from Pryor.

Who needs Pryor, Carlin, Belushi, Abbott and Costello, Howard Stern, The Marx Brothers or the Three Stooges when we have SZR and F4F.
you're right section. the marx bros, three stooges, abbott and costello - who doesn't split their sides from all that pie-in-the-face, bucket-over-the-head, nyuck-nyuck-nyuck hilarity?
nothing like sitting down with a bucket of popcorn, popping in "a night at the opera" and laughing till i cry.

just to show that i'm not necessarily biased against old comedy, i think "all in the family" may be the most brilliant and hilarious show of all time.
"2 and a half men"? come on fagel, seriously.

yeah, dangerfield was pretty good, but that had a lot to do with his style as much as his material.

Some guys who worked in the '70's:
Richard Pryor
George Carlin
Bill Cosby
Bob Newhart
Rodney Dangerfield
Robert Klein
Jackie Mason
Andy Kaufman
Steve Martin
Cheech & Chong
Flip Wilson
Monty Python
Mel Brooks
John Belushi
All hacks I guess.

I think we can all agree Larry the Cable Guy is the worst standup act to get publicity in a loooong time. The guy's filthy rish, of course, but just brutally unfunny.
Look, the reason I think Blazing Saddles isn't funny is probably the same reason 70s standup "doesn't hold up." They broke through barriers and were funny at the time. Now, their original acts have been copied and eventually parodied.
I can appreciate the humor of the 70s (or 80s), but I ain't laughing at it.

ntff. he's at the top of my list of hate. nothing i hate more than reading or watching accounts of the "glory days" of SNL in the late '70s. everybody just patting each other on the back, talking about how special it all was, how everyone was a genius and how brilliant this or that sketch was. like they invented comedy.
brutal.
