What's so special about Bob Newhart?

just the greatest, super dry, delivery of all time. he actually made stuttering sound cool. i think i tried working a fake stutter for a perioed of my life.

i'm talking about his tv shows, not familiar with his standup, unfortunately.

Family Guy has its moments but there's way too many painfully unfunny non-sequitirs. I think it wreaks of trying too hard.

Seriously. No plot, no soul, just lame "Remember the 80's? jokes"

Sorry.

NEAG, still waiting to hear what comedians you think are funny. The silence has been deafening.

Agree on Newhart. His tandup was still funny. Does a lot of "talking" to invisible characters.

Family Guy is strung together one-liners. I like the Stewie character, but I'd never list it as a great comedy show.

Seinfeld, despite it's overplay, is probably my favorite sit-com. Fantastic writing that only got better as the years went on, memorable characters, parodied (Drew Carrey Show), and left a lasting mark on television and out culture - good or bad.

I'll give a tip of the hat to Drew Carrey's show. He took his show in many directions and refused to be bound by sit-com rules. Music pieces, Rocky Horror theme, spot the error shows, cartoon charcters/Sim show, etc.

May not have been always funny, but it was always unique and many times entertaining.

Zak, your assessment wreaks of over-analysis

It's a cartoon, you can laugh it it without looking for deeper meaning.

The Family Guy "Star Wars" thing should've never been done. Waited for it to be funny and it never really was.

So:

Kevin Nealon = funny
Mel Brooks = not funny.

All righty then.

Good call on Brenner - missed him on my 70's list. Also thought it was you who said all 70's comedians sucked - it was Flesh. My bad.

I don't get Mel Brooks. I think he sucks and his movies are unwatchable no matter what older people tell me.

i was exaggerating for effect. the point is that the big '70s acts - the SNL crew, gene wilder, mel brooks - i just think are incredibly lame.

I won't push it since clearly you have at least SOME taste (Family Guy.)

Maybe Mel Brooks is a generational thing. I seriously don't know anybody around my age (born in the 60's) that doesn't think Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, The Producers, High Anxiety and History Of The World Part 1 are classics. He definitely lost it after that (starting with Space Balls) but his early stuff was excellent.

Who needs Pryor, Carlin, Belushi, Abbott and Costello, Howard Stern, The Marx Brothers or the Three Stooges when we have SZR and F4F.

you're right section. the marx bros, three stooges, abbott and costello - who doesn't split their sides from all that pie-in-the-face, bucket-over-the-head, nyuck-nyuck-nyuck hilarity?

nothing like sitting down with a bucket of popcorn, popping in "a night at the opera" and laughing till i cry.

F4F
Grew up watching the Stooges, Marx Brothers, Little Rascals, Abbott and Costello. Those shows were on every Saturday morning when I was a kid.

Sally Star had the Stooges on every afternoon when I came home from middle school. Still watch the Stooges every Sunday morning. Forgot to mention Jackie Gleason and the Honeymooners.

Different strokes for differnt folks bro.

Pick out two.

Section- I believe you and I are kindred spirits.

Remember the Little Rascals episode when they had the modified car pulled by a donkey, then the donkey bailed on them and Spanky was pulling all the levers while they were barrelling out of control? Or the one where they are on the train and the monkey gets loose and firecrakers start popping? How about when they go in search of pirate treasure in the cave and they leave Buckwheat to hold the ball of string they were using as a path to find their way back? The jam band on the radio show? Birthday at Darla's house? Skipping Sunday school to go fishin'?

I could go on and on- don't even get me started on the Stooges.
