1. How in the fuck have you never heard of Captain Beefheart?

2. Why do you brag about your own ignorance?

Prolly more of an age thing rather than ignorance. He flew under the radar of much of what was going on throughout his career, despite his influence(s) on many genres. I only knew about him as a result of my misspent youth as a community staff DJ up at Lehigh's radio station. I doubt many of my GenX peers know exactly who he was either. Influential but ahead of what was current in his time and even thereafter.

You're making excuses, Hooky. Real music fans want to learn. And if you want to learn, you know history.

NTFF! Never heard of him. I tried reading his wiki page when he died, but quickly realized he wasn't going to ring a bell. I read his crowning achievement was the Trout Mask Replica album and I wanted to give it a listen, but Amazon didn't have it available for digital download...literally the first time I've ever run into that problem.

That's a serious knock on his fame credibility, but I did see multiple reports of his death when it happened, so I'll concede his fame existed on some level!

I think you'd have to have a real penchant for the obscure to know Captain Beefheart.

I was working at a dinner theater when I was 14 or 15, and there was an actor in the show who knew a lot about music. Around this time, Gary Glitter's "Rock 'n Roll Pts. 1 & 2" was starting to be played in stadiums and arenas during sporting events. I wanted to learn the name of the song, but this was in the pre-Shazam/YouTube/WorldWideWeb era, so my best shot was to hum the song for this guy. He wasn't sure about it, but thought it was from a band or album called Burundi Black (it wasn't), and he copied that on one side of a cassette with some Captain Beefheart on the other. He gave me the Captain Beefheart purely because "every kid should know Captain Beefheart."

Technically, this act made him guilty of corrupting a minor.

I think what Dino's getting at is if you didn't know who he is (I didn't either) but give a crap about music history (I'm guessing NEAG doesn't) then you'd at least be curious about who he was. NEAG gave the "RIP anyway" so at least he's trying to be respectful even if it's not something he concerns himself with.

I wouldn't say he's a celeb, but definately influential based on what I read, though I'm also I'm pretty sure if this is his stuff, I'm not a fan (though I can see who would be)

Trout Mask Replica is routinely listed as one of the best albums of all time. I take it guys like f-d, etc, just haven't really pored over those kinds of lists? I know for a fact that it was on the Rolling Stone list that came out in the late 80's of the top 100 albums. I don't know where it stands with any more recent lists.

That said, I've never heard it, suspect I would hate it, and would not know Captain Beefheart if he walked by me (if he could).

Trout Mask Replica is routinely listed as one of the best albums of all time.

I'd debate that. Rolling Stone plugged it as #59 in 2005, but it's not making Time's top 100.

Influential to many but not to all. Don't want to disrespect a person who clearly was innovative and influential, just saying.

Ok, well, Blender lists it as the top 75 but Sports Illustrated does not.

WTF? I think you pretty much ended the debate there.

Totally thought you were going to say that the dinner theater actor turned out to be Captain Beefheart
