That still happens?

This thread was inspired by the Quirks thread, in which paying for goods at a store by check was discussed.

Essentially, things you can't believe still go on in 2008.

I noticed 2 today while I was out on the road today.

First, the "objects in mirror are closer than they appear" warning on the side mirrors of cars. How is it possible I have airbags that fly out of the ceiling and mirrors that auto-dim high beams, but they still can't manufacture a mirror that shows objects "at actual distance"?

Second, I stopped by a grocery store today in an "antique alley" Lancaster suburb and they had a "No shoes, no shirt, no service" sign. Are beatniks, hobos, and the cast of Point Break really shopping there? If so, do they all run up to the door fully expecting to do some shopping before that sign stops them in their tracks? If the took the sign down, would the locals stop wearing shirts and shoes?

Interestingly, it doesn't say you won't get service if you don't have pants on (for all those signs). So, if you let the bald eagle fly but have birkenstocks and a t-shirt you ought to be good to go - in more ways than one.

I'm not sure if it still happens or not: with the proliferation of digital cameras, does your soul still get sucked out of you when you get your picture taken?

That's beyond me, KB.

The more interesting question is whether or not a human clone has a soul. If they do not, I'd order a clone of myself for photographs and the like (to play it safe).

If they have souls, I just couldn't do that to myself.

This is a hybrid of Pet Peeves, Quirks, Poor Cash Paying Ettiquette:

Who the fuck are these people that go into 7-E ahead of me when I am just trying to get a pack of smokes or a cup of coffee and get MONEY ORDERS.

Is Someone kidding me? Money fucking orders?

Another thing that aSTOUNDS me. The liquor store I stop at most (Read: Home Base) does a BANG UP Check Cashing business. BANG UP. I guarantee if I stop by there on the way home there will be 10 people in line. Who the fuck ROUTINELY pays 3-5% or whatever just to cash a f'ing paycheck?

It's called a BANK people, the place where you don't get charged for "money orders" (They're called "Checks" or "Online Banking") and they don't take a cut of your pay.

Assholes.

Die.

Typically morons or people have a black mark or two in Chexsystems, rendering them unable to get a bank account.

What a gorgeous scam that's got to be.

Just sit there and take a cut on company-issued paychecks and gubmint checks. Plenty of checkpoints to ensure that the check is good these days too.

Hard to believe, but some people still don't trust banks or plastic money. Best to have all that stuff in cash stuffed under your mattress, even though an imploding economy makes anything not a precious metal worthless.

In any event, some people feel better having all their money in front of them, instead of wondering what fees the bank will take out if you pick your nose between 3:30pm and 5 on a Thursday or some junk like that.

Besides, I've yet to see a streetcorner pharmacy take American Express. Kinda tough, ya know...

I still have to use fax for some stuff.

I don't have a scanner at home, so I fax real estate papers I need to sign and things of that nature.

I should also note that even if I had a scanner for those types of documents (which I'll probably get eventually), I'm essentially taking up more time in my day so other assholes can receive my document with greater convenience.

how about just ending it at "Who the fuck are these people that go into 7-E"?

i thought they closed down those magnets of human despair in the 80's.

you live in delaware, glenn? check out a wawa.

and f-dallas, you work from home, correct? and you're something of a techno-geek, from what i've gathered. yet you don't have a scanner? i didn't even realize they sold printers in the last 5 years that didnt't come with them.

bottom line - you both make me sick.

Pennies. We still have pennies in our currency. That still happens?

"Rock and Roll" by the Velvet Undergound never reached pop airplay and yet we're inundated by filth on the radio from various suck-fucks like Avril Lavigne. Baffling to anyone with a brain.

Late-night TV evangelists are still pervasive and some people still think what they have to say is all righteous and shit. Really?

The U.S. government still wages botanical warfare on marijuana, spending how many millions on a harmless "drug" that does far less harm than its legal counterpart alcohol. Either nothing was learned from Prohibition or a reduction of drug enforcement would cause too many pigs to lose jobs (while our prisons are filled to capacity). Now how this still happens is beyond and noone can convince me otherwise.

Willie Green still starts for the Sixers.

F4F: Wawas are actually consolidating into larger stores and therefore getting marinalized. I can think of only about 3 in Delaware, all large and way out of my way for casual purchases.

SZR, you know anyone personally under the influence of a late night evangelist? If not, shouldn't you put them roughly under the same category as the "Steam Shark" and "OrangeGlo"?

nothing like buying a pack of gum or a cup of coffee and being handed back three pennies and a receipt.

it's basically like being handed a small pile of garbage.

Well, I do work from home sometimes. The main reasons I don't have a scanner are the facts that I have access to one at work, I fax papers very infrequently, and I haven't purchased a new printer in probably 6 or 7 years.

Next one I get will have a scanner on it, fellas. I promise.
