PE (though I don't listen to them now) still holds up, at least lyrically (even if I don't agree with their religious dealings).

Hammer? Pssh. I never got on the baggy pants train.

I expect Dino to throw out 3rd Bass or "White White Baby" ("yo, I'm not stupid....I just dupe it").

The problem with the statement, Dino, is that the groups/music back then didn't hold up all back then, either. And it wasn't like Snow was the first white guy who perpetrated a fraud ("Mackdaddy....Mackdaddy Mackdaddy Mackdaddy")

I was listening to a LOT of different stuff back then. Was just starting my rap phase, went out and bought PE, Ice T, NWA, Digital Underground, as well as some "lighter fare" like Dream Warriors, Arrested Development, blah blah blah. Again, not saying Dream Warriors hold up now, but at the time they sounded very different from most of the rap that was around - it was the height of gansta rap. Early "alternative rap" I guess you'd call them.

Just saying - they were no Snow/Hammer/Vanilla Ice.

Never listened to 3rd Bass.

I'll give the Dream Team credit for that, though had I listened to them back then I would've dismissed them for being not more than a Woolworth Quest and moved back to listening to Sade. And while Hammer was starting to popularize rippin' people off, it was an alternative to "Colon Tickler" Ice Cube and the gang.

At least they were better than Wham!'s attempt at rap....I mean, good GRAVY that sucked.

A pair of deft, intelligent rappers based in Toronto, King Lou and Capital Q formed Dream Warriors and released one of the finest alternative rap records of the era, 1991's And Now, the Legacy Begins. The pair began working together in 1989, organizing their own Beat Factory Productions with Rupert Gayle and signing to 4th & Broadway. The single "Wash Your Face in My Sink" prefaced the release of And Now, the Legacy Begins, and another track, "My Definition of a Boombastic Jazz Style," became an early touchstone in the jazz-rap movement.

Yeah, just like Vanilla Ice.
I'll stop now.

What were you listening to in 1990 Fred? Didn't say they hold up now...

PE, Tribe, NWA, Cube, Beasties, RUN-DMC, Naughty By Nature, Queen Latifah, BDP, (pant pant) De La Soul, Big Daddy Kane...

and those were just some of the "good" rappers

I grudgingly admit I had a DJ Jazzy Jeff and Fresh Prince album or two (but only because Jeff was truly a great DJ!)

Oh I see you had "alternative rap" as a category...

Well, I'd certainly agree with Arrested Development; I'd also lump De La Soul, Tribe, The Fugees, Jungle Brothers, and the Pharcyde in there as well
