Jules, one of my in-laws is in his 20s and we think he may be showing signs of Asperger's Syndrome. He was never diagnosed as a child. Out of curiosity, is Asperger's often diagnosed late? Also, how do they test for it and how extensive is the testing?

IHSY, it usually is diagnosed earlier. Keep in mind that if the person is in their late 20's, then going back in time testing and awareness was not as good.

They are often high functioning people who seem a bit off. And people usually write them off accordingly....as weird.

Sometimes there are forme fruste manifestations of a disease process that mean it has some but not all the typical features which can throw the hounds off the trail.

Jules, I tend to get pain in my neck from time to time, like my muscles in that area get inflamed. I've iced it down, which sometimes helps, and I've used icyhot and various neck massage devices, but the issue keeps coming back. I'm wondering if there are things like exercises or something that I can do to keep my neck loose and possibly build strength so the problem isn't as fequent.

Look at Fred, latching on to yet another wedge issue. It's not surprising that you have no problem with the White House attempting to legislate via the court system because they don't want to go through Congress.

So you have no problem with conservative Christians not only attempting to "legislate", but retard science to the point that people suffer?

You're saying you are "pro-suffering" then?

The law is the law. Want it changed? Take it through Congress and clarify the language of Dickey-Wicker.

For the record, I have no problem with stem cell research or it's funding, so you can save your typical pathetic class warfare shit for another topic.

The shame of this is that the "wedge" issue, BMA, actually delays or impedes care of patients in a very calculated manner to kowtow to the extreme right fringe and its voter base. This cynical political ploy has real medical harm. I can tell you that diabetics and heart patients would benefit if we didn't have a few dicks masquerading as champions of the Bible.

We'd also be leading the way in stem cell research. That also means dollars. So, screw the medical implications. Screw even the capitalist implications. Roe V Wade must be suborned at every turn.

THAT is political expediency retailing to Sally-Jo and Billy-Bob in "God's Country". Why on earth those peeps consider the "Bible Belt" refer to it as that is beyond me. Last I knew it was in Jerusalem and Nazareth. But details never hampered their misguided decisiveness.

How does aspirin know where it hurts? Or more specifically how does it diminish one pain and not another?

Here's the situation, I shattered a tooth the other day and it hurts like hell (especially in this cold). I also tweaked my back in the same fall. Now when I got home, I took a handfull of aspirin and the pain in my mouth went away but the back pain stayed. That was fine by me since the back pain was workable, but the tooth was agony.

But I would still like to know why.

FB, I've not seen anything like that. It looks like most of his frontal lobe is missing. The precentral gyrus (most posterior aspect of the frontal lobe) is necessary for function. Most of the mass can be done without but people's behavior will be significantly affected. This guy looks like he doesn't have it at all, which would make it difficult to explain. I'd have to see an imaging study to know more about what is there and what isn't. The deformation of the skull alone is not enough to explain or discount truth.

Jules (and maybe some parents out there with experience?), the topic came up with my wife today on cleaning products around our son, I was in the other room and used some surface cleaner and my wife freaked out saying that it was killing his braincells. I was about 20-30 feet away from them when cleaning but apparently the odor crept into the room.

The bottle says non-toxic but now she has me freaked out. Is my wife insane or should I get different cleaning products?

Glenn, I'm unsure if she realized the chemcial says non-toxic, if the chemical even being non-toxic is acceptable for a 2 month old to be around or anything. So yeah, I guess seriously, I don't have a problem with the stuff myself but considering the arguement this morning my wife and I had I figured I'd ask around.

Well, my take on these things is that limited exposure (open air room which is large) is going to be likely inconsequential. Most inhaled things impact the lungs before the brain.

On the flip side, keep in mind that these products are not regulated by the FDA for safety, and, as a result, it is hard to know the impact.

The more I see, the more I'm convinced we are truly unaware of the impact our environment has on us. That isn't to say what you did is going to be significant or have a meaningful, detrimental impact on your son. If you are able to, avoid it. Never hurts to be safe.

Great article about managing a patient and impact to the national costs society incurs from repeatedly experiencing these things one instance at a time.

I can say I've personally been in this situation more than I care to remember. I remember complaining to a colleague who ultimately said, "better to waste money on this test than explain it to twelve of your 'peers'".
