The reason removal was recommended was because I've had about 5 instances of tonsillitis/strep throat in the past 14 months.

Funny, ... oral sex now tops tobacco use as the leading cause of throat cancer in people under 50. (But I wouldn't worry NEAG, you're probably right in that it's probably just tonsillitis.)

Well, I hope it isn't anything that sinister, NEAG.
I've asked a few folks and they describe the procedure as a "chip shot" for elective (non tumor related) tonsillectomy for an ENT doc. They often do NOT recommend this despite recurrent infections for adults.
I'd say that your situation is peculiar and you should probably start with your PCP doing a work up. 5 bouts of strep in a healthy person is relatively uncommon unless you work with kids, homeless people or in a health care setting.
If it is not a cancer related procedure, then it is sometimes done for patients who have trouble with sleep apnea.

That's terrible. If that was my kid I'd probably be doing the same thing they are. Can't they go to another hospital? I mean, aren't kidney transplants common enough so you can chose where to have it done if the doctors at one place are douches?

i mean it's CHOP, and kindeys don't grow on trees.
god forbid i'm ever in this situation, but the doctor has to see a kid that may not be alive in 2 years and if that kidney is best served going to someone else

Wow, that is bold of the doc. I have a distinctly different bedside manner, NEAG, despite what your sources tell you.
As for going to another hospital, you have to find a place that does and manages renal transplant patients. I don't know what other children's hospital in the region does that. TJ doesn't do pediatrics. Albert Eintstein? Temple? Been out of the Philly area for a long time now. They'd would have to find a place with surgeons they could trust and MORE importantly to manager her after transplant. That is far more involved than the surgery itself which is not that complex.
As for denying her the surgery with a living donor, that is mind boggling. Even from a financial standpoint, the living donor is more favorable for the hospital. If they go down this road, then it becomes a slippery slope. I'm sure the publicity will force their hand regardless of what they internally feel.

One other thing, I don't know much about the genetic disorder, but she might have significant comorbidities that would make surgery too risky.
I also don't know why she can't continue with dialysis.

got one for you Doc,
Back in November, I apparently strained my arm while working out. I was aware of it, but thought I could work through it w/o straining it too much. Two months later, I'm still feeling it a bit. Specifically, I'm getting a burning sensation on the inner side of my left elbow (toward the elbow cap). The area is tender to the touch, and seems to be more toward the bicep side (right behind the elbow). I don't really have any problems or pain moving my arm, and don't feel anything when there's no load on the arm. I have also been able to continue to work my bicep w/ minimal discomfort by altering my workout. There's no noticeable swelling in the area, but it seems to be something that keeps hanging around. Is this something that will get better if I just stop working the area or is it something that I'm going to need to get checked out?

Hook,
If you have your arm by your side palm up is it the part of the elbow closest to your body or further out?
If it is the part closest (medial), then it is most likely a bursitis. The outer one (lateral) is often related to certain types of activity which load the elbow and is more common in tennis players by their backhand movements. Either way, if you aren't feeling it without load and you feel it with, it is either tendinitis (usually painful to touch) or bursitis. Both take time and rest to allow for healing. Ice and anti-inflammatory meds (ibuprofen) help.
What was the motion you were making when you felt the strain?
If you are STILL having problems after 2-4 weeks, can't hurt to have a sports med physician see it.

Hooky,
Sounds a lot like the "tennis elbow" which I was diagnosed with last year (no i don't play tennis - I strained it moving shit into my shed.) I got a cortisone shot in the elbow and wore a brace just below the elbow for a few weeks and was fine.

As per your example (palm up), it's on the inside. It was one of two things; either doing too much weight on butterfles using pull-down weights, or curls with the preacher bar (I don't use the bench for that, I typically stand). I'm not sure exactly which, but I should have known better than using the preacher bar...I had a bad muscle strain in the past using that damn thing and resolved to only use dumbells. 20 years later, for some stupid reason, I thought that I'd be just fine & dandy using it again.

It sounds more like an epicondylitis rather than a burisitis. Either way, tincture of time with anti-inflammatory meds and ice after stressing it should do.
IF you find that 4 weeks does not a body good, then you could see the doc. They can give you a steroid injection to break the inflammatory cycle and allow you to heal if it doesn't do so with time/rest.

Usually one. It doesn't sound like a chronic problem and it isn't a repetitive use injury. Maybe 2?
If he were a tennis player, he would likely have it done more frequently because he'd be aggravating the injury frequently.

FB, mea culpa. I meant to reply. There is nothing inherently wrong with chiropractic medicine. I think I would not ascribe all the benefits they do regarding their manipulations. However, people HAVE benefited from their therapy. I guess it is hard to definitively answer that questions since it is too general. On the whole, I think it has a role in medicine.
KB, are you asking what I think of evidence based medicine? I think there is an enormous value to it. The real challenge is that many signature studies upon which practice might be based is too small in number or there are significant challenges that should be taken into consideration. What I am saying is that while I do believe we have to respect the science, it is inexact enough that we should be astute enough to recognize where it falls short. In doing so, we may also realize that not one size fits all patients.

like in pt, there is shitloads of evidence out there, and tons of books being published on ebp since the profession is moving ahead. since chiro has relatively recently moved into doctoral positions, they should also be following the same thing
