SUPERFIENDS
RPM2008
Album concept: comment on the state of life in the Western world but locate the true nature of the self amidst the chaos and greed of modern life. the music is arranged in such a way as to connect to the listener at the height of their anxiety, but carefully bring them down lower and lower in the grounding of themselves and wisdom of the ages to come to terms with the madness and find themselves calm and peaceful at the end of this journey of understanding and self discovery.
Pigs of the Western World (Eat More Grease) = 9:14
beat poet Allen Ginsberg delivering a live poetry reading about the overabundance of fat in the Western diet and how illogical it is that our diet is the one spreading to the rest of the world. This is delivered over a combination of jazz, acid jazz, and electronica all of which are among the best American exports of all time but are all from the ART world to contrast with the bad exports that come from American greed.
Renegade Hope = 13:08
Barack Obama delivers a speech about "hope" to Ebeneezer Baptist Church in Atlanta which was founded by the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. himself who was well known for the phrase "keep hope alive". In this way Obama is placing himself in the lineage of King's fight for civil rights and the idealistic pursuit of hope itself. The musical elements are derived of hip hop and electro which sprang from black culture in the years between King and Obama and are what Chuck D calls "the Black CNN" a way to communicate via music in the same way that African tribes use drums to send messages long distances from early times. The struggle continues but it is clear the ideas and ideals of equality are still alive as Dr King would have wanted.
Dot The Sky = 9:57
a midwestern farmer waxes euphoric over the land and skies and his love of it over an ambient dub groove full of sounds from nature to connect what used to be a typical occupation (agriculture) to show how it has now become an extremely rare thing to be connected to the land anymore.
The Mind Factor = 11:30
the Dalai Lama speaks through an interpreter whose voice has been manipulated for this song about the mind and seeking happiness, and how training the mind is the key to experiencing the happiness and joy you seek. This is over a bed of sounds from cheap little plastic "buddha boxes" designed to be meditation aids which are commonplace in Asia. Beneath that are deep trance grooves and ambient pads to also help induce a trance like meditative state. Many of the sounds induce a submerged underwater feeling. This track can be used for meditation purposes and the "subliminal lesson" contained within will also support that activity as well.
