NEAG, you watch gameshows? I kinda figured you as being interested in something different, though watching the masses scramble for cash does kinda make sense.

The entire season was dreadful. I guess it can't end until Deb finds out the real Dexter so I'm hoping it happens next season and then they're done and I don't have to watch anymore. Should be interesting to see if there's any change in screentime between the two now that they're divorced IRL.

i actually got into this season after a terrible start and was enjoying it.

but regarding the finale: as stupid as the deb/plastic sheet thing was, i almost laughed out loud at the resolution of the quinn situation. i had to ask my wife if that had really happened.

Yeah, Dexter sucks. I'll watch again next year, though.

Also, my wife thought this was "the best season yet"...swear to science.

Seriously, which day made him happier:

- Clean bill of health.

- No longer has to see Deb naked. Actually, Deb's body looks decent naked. It's with clothes on that she looked like a crooked-faced praying mantis/lanky 8 year old boy.

Dexter has gone from someone who only kills people who've beaten the system (sometimes with help of his testimony) to a highly proactive murderer. Instead of allowing the cops to arrest and prosecute guys like Trinity or Chase he has to do it himself and lots of people get hurt in the meanwhile. There is never any expounding on this, and it's one of the things I hate most about the show: there is very little continuation from season to season. Dexter changes and we're just supposed to accept it. La Guerta and Angel are in love because they say they are. Dexter's a morally repugnant asshole but he's still supposed to be likeable.

The show took an intriguing premise (Dexter's duality) and they just killed it with a hammer.

it make not be well-crafted, but i don't think it's just carelessness on the part of the producers that dexter is morphing into a full-fledged serial killer with fewer boundaries.

i think you are supposed to be left wondering if dexter would have killed deb; whereas it would have been unthinkable in seasons past.

I dunno, when you tell your audience (in voiceover) about your code every 5 seconds and then by season 4 you don't have one anymore, I think that's a fault of the writing.

The Gomez/Gonzales (sorry...all spanish names sound alike to me) love story was the dumbest thing they've ever done in that show.

I also don't understand why there has to be another serial killer in every season.

That's his "dark passenger", Zak.

I like all the reference to killing around him. "Dexter, you make a killer chef salad".

"Dex, you really murdered that slice of pizza. You must be starving!"

It crossed mine. I was thinking he would be exposed, try to explain, and she'd either sobbingly let him escape or she'd follow "her code" and he'd be forced to murder her to survive.

"slice of life"

a-ha!

(isn't the point of the show that he started out with this iron-clad code his dad created for him, but as he's grown to see himself more as person and less of a caged monster, he's outgrowing the code?)

I don't buy that because, again, I think one of the failings of the show is that it isn't cumulative. Moments in Dexter's recent past have very little effect on his actions in the future.

I think the theme of show is he's kind of devolving/spinning off his axis.

Presumably, before we were shown this 5 year window into his life, he lived alone, followed his code, and killed people he deemed worthy of death without much trouble for years.

We're kind peaking into this particular time in his life where he's straying from the code, possibly growing as a human, and seeing the blowback.

yeah, that's how i see it. when the show starts, we see him taking tentative steps towards establishing real relationships with people. he gets a girlfriend, develops a paternal relationship with her kids, has his own kid, gets married, etc. he starts to realize that he's more than the code, or his father, allowed him to be. however, as he starts breaking the code and evolving in his own life, everything starts to spiral out of control.

so i think the theme of the show - dexter caught between these two worlds - is fairly consistent throughout.
