Agreed, really good episode in a really good season of Mad Men.

flesh inspired me to finally watch Veep (had first 6 episodes DVR-d.) Pretty good.

Really tried to give Game of Thrones a shot. Watched three episodes from season 1, I think it sucks

It could just be me, but I wasn't really a fan of the first season, either. It was okay and got better as it wore on, IMO, but I was lukewarm on it at best.

I think this season is much better and completely different. In hindsight, last season basically served to give the audience a basic lay of the land. The relationships and back stories of the families are all so ridiculously complex that even with an entire season of basic history, I still don't think they scratched the surface.

All that to say I think the show much better now than a year ago, but I'm not sure how others feel about it.

Seriously, just when I start questioning Jon Hamm's acting they finish up like that. The wife was like "that has to be the finale" but there's two more episodes. Most shows won't pull triggers like that until the finale, but that's why MadMen is so good.

Zack Morris slams Saved by the Bell, calling the writing "hokey."

Sounds like someone is getting too big for Bayside.

Alright, preppy. We know it wasn't a "great" show. You'd better stop shitting on it, though. If Kelly finds out, you'll drive her right back to Jeff.

The writing was anything but hokey. I for one think it is comparable to Fitzgerald and Hemingway at times.

Breaking Bad is now alone at the top. Can't wait for Season 5

Seriously my only complaint about MM was that the finale was a little meh after the past two episodes. That has everything to do with the previous two episodes being remarkable and the finale being just really good. The more I think about it the more I want to watch it again because I think there's a ton of little things to savor for next season rather than cliffhanger-like material that hits you over the head.

I -really- liked seeing Megan's character develop, and that was probably my favorite part of the finale.

Lots of reasons to feel that way, SZR, but principally it's two things - too much time devoted to silly, boring subplots and too many about-faces plot-wise.

Here was a show that within the span of three episodes, revealed that a) a main character has a tax problem, b) said character has mounting anxiety about work life, c) suicide by hanging! But not to worry, because the next episode we learn that three months later, the firm's come off its best quarter ever (despite no mention of the live-or-die Porsche acquisition) and is ready to move onto the floor upstairs.

As for the subplots - the Pete Campbell affair this season was ridiculous and chewed up loads of airtime. Don's kid and her boyfriend weren't interesting (and horribly bad actors, sorry to say - the kid is Weiner's son!?!). The Hare Krishna stuff was just dumb. And the show hasn't done right by the Roger and Joan characters.

I will say I like Don's new wife - reading around the web I think I'm in a minority there.

Could post loads more on this but just don't have the time. I recommend to anyone Alan Sepinwall's blog on Hitfix - he seemed to enjoy the season as a whole but has some of the same concerns I do (and more).

I will definitely watch Season 6, though. Still a great show with the second-best character on TV.

What does the best quarter ever have anything to do with the hanging? He hung himself because he stole money from the firm and was fired and couldn't handle the pressure of rising so high to fall so low. I don't feel like that got rushed, there were elements of that building all season long.

The Jaguar account allows the firm to move from being a minor firm to being something bigger. It's more of a plot device in order to get the ball rolling on very big accounts (Corning coming up next season). The firm/show can't just keep picking little firms to represent and not recycle stories so in order for them to change some of the dynamic of the firm into something bigger and more profitable, Jaguar pushes them into the realm they were in prior to LS bailing on them.

For the record I'm not saying it's a bad one, just that they needed a big name to bring the firm back to being a big firm. They already explored the hell out of being a struggling firm so now they can jump into decadence again and really start drinking/whoring like before.

I think this has been one of their best seasons and I think all these little diversions were fun, though I still haven't watched the last two episodes.

The show has kind of evolved from "the mystery of Don Draper, sometimes featuring the people he knows" to a story about the entire cast. I don't know if that's a long term shift or a short term one, but with about 15-20 interesting characters and 12 new episodes in the last 2 years, I don't think they have the luxury of too much more development without killing off more cast members.

I can understand what you're saying, OLV, but I enjoyed this season.

This was the best season for sure. I think it is difficult to focus on a specific plot for this show since it really just follows the arc of the lives of the people at this advertising agency. It has a more bird's eye view than the targeted view of Don Draper now.

Shows like this are different than most shows in that it doesn't have to follow the standard storyline and allows for divergence. Crime shows usually have one major theme throughout a season. Shows like Lost have a specific trajectory. Shows like this are more diffused rather than intro, development, climax, conclusion (which it still does have - eg, Jaguar).

I'm with you on the Hare Krishna tangent. That was stupid.

The Pete Campbell tangent was a little off as well. Just did nothing for the story.

I still think they did a fantastic job overall.

Jules, what I'd argue is each of those bizarre "tangents" in the plot is just an interesting way to give you that bird's eye view of the character's life.

It's weird...the show is a funny, quirky drama about an advertising agency in the 60's. By that definition along, about 20% of the plot in the entire series makes sense.

Totally agree. The only challenge the producers make is that if the tangent doesn't add to the depth of the character, then you've squandered limited time to deliver that perspective.

I guess the Hare Krishna thing could be to remind the viewer of the hippy movement of the 60's?

Otherwise, I like those tangents.

yeah, they really don't waste a second of anything. that is def why they hare stuff was in there. and it was like 7 total minutes, it's not like they wasted a lot of time on it.

lyte nailed it about lane, it had nothing to do with how successful they were, it was bc lane stole money. he was increasingly desperate as this season wore on.yeah, they really don't waste a second of anything. that is def why they hare stuff was in there. and it was like 7 total minutes, it's not like they wasted a lot of time on it.

i think the pete campbell story was another remnant of the difference between men and women back then. the insurance guy was cheating, and it didn't matter, but once the wife did, she needed to get "fixed".

i also thought the kids added something bc they both showed a lot about the parenting. she hated her mom, he was shipped away so they didn't have to parent
