Getting with the 21st century

OK. I've finally decided that my house is going to get cable within the next couple of months. But I am quite clueless as to what's out there, price, advantages/disadvantages, yadda yadda yadda. So I'd like to hear your suggestions.

Keep in mind I do NOT have an HDTV (*and probably won't get one before I get cable), and I just got 2 coupons from the gov't for those new receivers once signals change in '09.

And please, do not remind me how behind the times I am.

While you're at it, you might want to invest in a little invention called running water

the title of this thread says everything; bass, uh, getting cable is more like getting with the 20th century.

I am trying to decide between the Datsun B210 and the Toyota Tercel. Anyone have suggestions?

Le Car is in the mix too, FWIW.

Fear not, bass, for I, too, am cableless. Well, I get a handful of channels for free through the coax, but I'm never home enough to need any more.

Don't put your TV too close to your fax machine.

Well, answer me this simple question - which one is better? Cable or dish?

Bass, there are no easy answers to this. F-D might be able to give you one of his patented breakdowns but I fear that that might be a bit like me telling someone the fine art of drinking a wine cooler or two.

Very true. I've been there and it isn't pretty.

Everyone will tell you something different, but you said you're not going HD. Are you planning on any pay channels (like HBO)? Do you want a DVR?

Also, I assume your local service is Comcast, but do you have DSL options for High Speed Internet? Do you have FIOS in your area (from Verizon)?

FIOS won't be offered in my neighborhood for a while (probably haven't laid down all the FOCs yet).

Running with DSL for right now, and have Verizon phone, so I was wondering if I should stay with the dish, or if Comcast has enough to make me switch (and if Digital Voice is worth it, as well).

Side note - I was working on someone's comp one day and got blamed for taking down most of Comcast on the East Coast. Fun times.

How much do you pay for Internet and Phone?

The Triple Play from Comcast might be the best fir for you.

Running $80 for phone and internet, I believe after the taxes and what-not. We don't have long distance (use the cells for that), and I like the wireless DSL modem I got for free.

Call me clueless, but I've not heard too much about the Comcast TP.

Actually, yeah, this one is a layup, go with the triple play. It's great for a year but then it gets dicey. You get all 3 for about $100 and that will include HBO and Skinemax (or some shit) but after that year they are gonna start grinding on you.

Comcast doesn't let it be known, but you can get unlimited internet for about $25 a month. So long as you have another service through them (cable TV, for instance), you can get their economy internet. It's a slightly slower download speed that you'd never notice unless you do massive downloads frequently. For the average user (me), there's nothing different.

If you flip over their notices about price increases - how I found out about it - you see they offer it. I called and was told it didn't exist. I pressed and they found it and I got the rate.

call every year or 6 months and ask for retention.

That's what I'm concerned about, GGB - after a year, I would have to jump through hoops to change the service before they lay the wood to me (what is it with this site these days?)

I know that the dish through Verizon hits you with some bad changes as well.

Does anyone have voice and how is it?

Yup, Bass...go with the triple play. Find out what it will be after the first year, but you're going to pay $99 per month for Internet, cable, phone, and unlimited long distance on their phone system (I think that's included).

yeah, for comcast. it's the department set up just to offer deals to keep customers. by asking for it right off the bat, you don't have to argue with customer service about cancelling or anything like that. I call every 6 months or year and keep my cable down

when you call to inquire about prices, just ask them straight up how much the service will be after the 12 month offer expires.

I have Digital Voice and it's as good as a normal phone line. Never had a problem whatsoever (other than the fact that you lose phone service if your Internet connection goes down).

After the year is up with comcast, what do they start charging you?

With cablevision, I have their "triple play service" I pay $90 for all three for the first year. When the year is up, my bill goes up $40 a month. Considering I was paying $130 a month for cable tv and intenet, plus another $40-$60 for my AT&T phone line, it is still a decent deal when the year is up.

And since not many people know about it, it shouldn't be an issue, I assume...

I never knew of anything aside from Verizon/Comcast, munch.

Well, maybe Adelphia before they got swallowed up
