Worthy of his own thread.
I haven’t been watching wrestling for awhile and have pretty much lost interest in it. But last night was Ric Flair’s farewell address on Raw. It was a great tribute and really emotional.
Love him or hate him, nobody did more or sacrificed more for wrestling.
Here’s to the man and to be the man you gotta beat the man.
WOOOOOO!

For me, Wrestling has always been a nostalgia thing, save that 1 bit towards the end of college when I was tipped to my favorite as a kid (Macho Man) makin a comeback in WCW. Even that was fueled by nostalgia.
I never used to watch NWA (That was Flair's outfit i think) and never saw Flair until I was in college and he was a part of the WCW promotion- so I never 'enjoyed' his glory days and always found him to be an overrated, old, flabby 'nuttin to see here' type of guy.
I always was like "THIS is Ric Flair? This is IT? Ugh."

Watched wrestling quite a bit from ages 10-14 or so... at that point, Flair was partners with Mr. Perfect, who's dead now. (I know this because I was staying in the same hotel in Tampa as him when he died.) I remember Flair winning the Royal Rumble for the championship once, back in I'll say 1991?
I cannot believe this guy was still wrestling. He HAS to be pushing 60 years old.

He was definitely the first to bring over the top “flair” to wrestling.
He also started the “catch phrase” craze too.
He was also the first “heel” people regularly cheered for.
I loved him because he was different. During the first real hulk-a-mania craze, he gave you something original to cheer for.

If you don't think the WWF Attitude Era (from like 97-99) wasn't fantastic television and entertainment, I don't want to be friends with you.

NEAG, I wouldn't say I "followed" it in those days, but definitely remember most of the characters. I remember full-scale arguments in the dorm rooms over whether to watch Raw or Monday Night Football. That famous Jets comeback, from down 37-7 vs. the Dolphins? I missed most of it because Kane and the Undertaker were fighting for the 20th time...

The mid 80's "golden era" was every bit as entertaining as the attitude era.
I mean where else can you see Cindy Lauper and Rodey Piper in the same ring!

EAG, the WWF (I refuse to call it the WWE) and WCW were both at their peak from 1996-99. Between the WCW vs. NWO feud and the Attitude Era there was something to look forward to every monday (What got me hooked was Stone Cold breaking into Brian Pillman's house).
Monday Nights were the best nights of the year for that 3-year span:
8 PM - WCW Monday Nitro on TNT
9 PM - WWF Raw (occasional switch to WCW)
10 PM - WWF War Zone
11 PM - The first minute of Silk Stalkings
Add in a potential Eagles MNF game and a Flyers game (sometimes all four would be on at once) and it would be absolute euphoria.

I'll agree with Munch there.
And Id take MONDAY NITE NITRO over WWF at the time NEAG cites as his favorite too, for already stated reasons.
Tho by 99, I must admit to flippin back and forth between broadcasts.

I watched more Nitro than Raw back then too. Stone Cold had his moments, but I never really liked him.
The Rock however had the best stage presence of any wrestler of any era.

Oh man, Nitro blew then. They were trying everything to compete with WWF then, even bringing in Vince Russo. Just bad stuff (although the actual "wrestlers" were better)

Um, yeah. In light of recent events Im goin to ask that you never utter that again, thanks.
When Russo joined WCW, i watched maybe 2 more shows and bailed. Savage was done or being phased out- 1 or the other.

WCW won the ratings war for two straight years.

Please, ratings are meaningless. WWF was making money hand over fist, WCW couldn't compete with that

Didn't WCW basically shoot themselves in the foot when they sarcastivcally announced that Mankind had won the WWF title (or some title) and it caused everyone watching the broadcast to change channels?

I thought they were bad before Russo, too. Just boring, and they tried so much, and never stuck with it (except for Goldberg, which got beat to hell).
