Completely unrelated, but I also heard Ben Stein saying Obama holding the DNC in a sports stadium with 75K people chanting his name sounded eerily similar to Germany in the 1930's and 40's. Yikes.

Because comparing it to JFK's acceptance speech in a sports stadium wouldn't be as fun.

They are smart to go after him on this.

It's the #1 issue right now and that old coot is currently on the side of public opinion on oil/drilling so they will continue to hammer Barry on this.

You don't think "Obama (personally) is responsible for high gas prices" is slightly misleading?

That's about as "honest" and running a picture of a dead Iraqi child and saying "Who's responsible for murdering Children?" with a McCain picture next to it.

I agree that they should go after him on drilling, though.

I'm finding myself more and more alligned with McCain on energy and the economy. In fact, Obama is starting to frighten me a little bit in those two issues the way McCain frightens me on foreign relations.

fd, of course I don't think he is directly responsible but you have to remember that the majority of the folks who go to the booth to vote for either of these clowns aren't the brightest to begin with. However, McCain has to do whatever it takes to hammer Barry on the energy issue if he wants to win.

Oil has risen dramatically over the years. The rise is due to MidEast tensions (over and above the Iraq War, there are other situations that caused increases in energy drawn from the ME), an increase in demand and a supply that is not keeping pace to meet the demand.

With rising oil prices, you have generally two options:

1) increase supply
2) decrease demand

In the most recent months, what have Democrats done to:

1) increase supply
2) decrease demand

In the most recent months, what have the Republicans done to:

1) increase supply
2) decrease demand

As respective faces of their party, they will set the agenda for their party when they take office next January. They are now in a position to dictate or pre-empt their presidential policy with legislative efforts or political efforts to bolster their credibility and to give indications as to their future policy.

Obama has allowed the Republicans to gain the momentum when he could have easily kept the momentum. He hasn’t made serious efforts to increase supply or reduce demand (within his capacity as a US Senator and the face of the Democratic Party). Without a doubt, his fellow congressmen aren’t helping him, but he’s in the leadership spot now. He either takes the lead and gets them moving toward an energy policy before the election or he risks giving this issue to the Republicans.

Going on a round the world trip while Republicans hit a kitchen table issue is ill-conceived. He should have gone to Afghanistan and Iraq and head straight back to the US with a changed view on the Surge and an energy policy that will have an immediate impact.

A Pew Research Center Poll released earlier this month found that 47 percent of Americans viewed increased drilling and construction of new power plants as the nation's highest energy priority, up from 35 percent just a few months ago. The number who saw more energy conservation and regulation as the top priority fell from 55 percent to 45 percent.
Bush announced last month that he would support lifting the moratorium, but would wait for Congress to act first. But on Monday he said he decided to act now because Congress had made no progress toward boosting U.S. energy supplies.
"Today I've taken every step within my power to allow offshore exploration of the (Outer Continental Shelf)," he said in a Rose Garden speech. "This means the only thing standing between the American people and these vast oil resources is action by the U.S. Congress.'"
Bush's use of his bully pulpit also reinforced the campaign message of Republican presidential candidate John McCain, who wants to lift the moratorium and allow coastal states to choose whether to allow drilling. McCain praised Bush's announcement as a very important signal.”

Obama’s reaction:

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama issued a statement saying, "If offshore drilling would provide short-term relief at the pump or a long-term strategy for energy independence, it would be worthy of our consideration, regardless of the risks. But most experts, even within the Bush administration, concede it would do neither."

Oil has fallen around 15% since Bush made his move.

The Democrats, and the face of the Democratic Party, are losing on this issue. The ad is capitalizing on Republican momentum and Democratic paralysis.

The surge "worked" because the sunni's were paid to stop shooting at us and the shias knew that they had to keep quiet to retain control of the government. I'm happy with the results.

Jules,
There was far more to it. It's overly cynical and completely marginalizes the efforts by our troops with the change in tactics and interaction with the Iraqis.

The surge worked because Petraeus took his successful strategy from the 101st and brought it to a national level. In addition, there were political developments that occurred because al Qaeda overplayed their hand and because the situation stabilized enough to allow political reconciliations and maneuvering/horse-trading.

It was a brilliant strategy, which is why Obama wants to do the same thing in Afghanistan. Give credit where it's due. For all the mis-steps and blunders, the Bush Administration listeded to the right guy at the right time and followed the right path. I don't give Bush & Co. total credit or even half credit, just enough because they recognized the right course. I think credit for Iraq is Petraeus', Crocker's, our troops, and the Iraqis'.

Pelosi won't even let a bill come to the floor. She is a communist and hates America. I'm still waiting for her common sense plan she pledged for gas prices back in 2006. She is the biggest disgrace in politics today.

My question isn't the math. My question is how much a removal of the executive drilling ban actually moved oil price.

You know natural gas and corn have also fallen. Did he remove the excutive ban on corn growing, as well?

Demand fell, supplies rose, and economic contraction weren't involved?

Come on.

By the way, expending on what I was talking about with Obama's energy policy...

I think most reasonable people agree that Nuclear is the best way to go. It won't solve all of our problems and it won't happen overnight, but in terms of cheap, proven power we have the technology to institute today, Nuclear is the way to go.

McCain wants to build a minimum of 45 nuclear plants over the next 22 years, with the ultimate goal being 100 new plants.

Obama doesn't even mention the word "nuclear" in the energy policy on his site. His full eneregy policy only mentions it once, saying he's commited to finding safer ways to store nuclear waste.

To me, that's his biggest gaffe so far and not one many people will hit him on. If you still don't think nuclear power is safe, you're an idiot. If you think we can have any chance at reducing dependance on foreign oil with nuclear power, you're insane.

If you have an energy policy of any kind that doesn't feature nuclear power moving forward, your plan will fail.

I honestly don't think I can vote for a guy who doesn't understand that. If he doesn't see the light, it's a massive error.
