Euro Cup 2008?

Been off the past few days and saw some great games. Loved watching the professional diving team of Italy get owned by Holland. Felt bad that Russia didn't convert more of its chances against Spain. Spain has some very creative players up front.

Romania v France = BORING! Romania played for the tie (understandably).

As much as I hate Christiano Ronaldo, the guy has some serious skills. He really does have insane foot speed.

Seth, he was the voted the best player in Europe for a couple of years now. He plays for Manchester United which has the largest world wide sales for sports apparel in the country and was purchased by Jay Glazer precisely for its huge marketability. They won the Champion's League this year (Man U) and were second place finishers last year.

Anyway, his country of origin is Portugal which is known for its creative (read short passing) style of soccer. Ronaldo is one of their best (but Allen Iverson early years selfish) player.

Jules, how do you pick a team to cheer for in Euro 2008?

I used to be a huge fan of Italy but their style of diving didn't appeal to my sense of sportsmanship when I got older. This year, its kind of hard. I hate Greece's style. All defense and little creativity (like the Devil's left wing lock on steroids).

Now, I prefer the short passing teams:

Spain, Portugal, and Holland. So, I tend to root for them. England can be fun just because of the ridiculous passion of their fans that clearly crosses the line into insanity.

FEF, I can say that I definitely prefer soccer to golf, baseball and most basketball (NCAA tourney and Finals nonwithstanding). The Euro Cup and the World Cup are two events which are pretty darned amazing in skill, excitement and pageantry. Having a horse in the Stanley Cup Finals is probably the best. Then your team in the Superbowl (close call and probably an even finish). Then its soccer on this stage. There is also the Champions League which pits the best European clubs against each other in a complex tourney that lasts quite a long time and that happens annually. The World Cup and Euro Cup are every four years. They are separated by two and never overlap.

It's also stupid the way you turn it on at like 3 in the afternoon and it's all dark there. They really should get on Eastern Standard or Daylight time.

We need the Millwall guys to come back and make this thread more entertaining.

Soccer bores me to tears. I'm sure it is fun to watch live but it translates to TV worse than any other sport I can think of.

The diving in that sport is worse than that of Bruce Bowen, Sidney Crosby, and Claude Lemieux combined.

I live in a very Greek neighborhood (at one time, it held the largest population of Greeks outside of Greece), and they threw an epic, impromptu party on the streets when Greece won the Euro Cup 4 years ago. I was planning on hitting a local bar to watch them on Saturday, but if their style is boring, I might pass.

We have some Polish places that are apparently pretty into soccer, so I might try to catch a game there. Jules, what kind of style does Poland play? How about the Czechs? I seem to remember that the Czechs were kind of exciting in years' past, but I haven't kept up with it.

The Poles are pretty classical long ball team. Kinda boring. The Czechs play a combo of short passing and long ball. They generally have taller strikers (like the Swedes) and have a good chance of scoring by header. They generally are pretty exciting as a dark horse team (the Czechs). The Poles are sort of the 8-8 NFL team....don't really suck but aren't very good.

Azzurri looked like crap yesterday. I am guessing Donadoni won't be at the helm come WC 2010. And that many of the current players won't be present either.

I would guess Germany and Spain are the class of this tournament...

By the way, what the Hell happened with England? Why didn't they qualify?
