Here's a good article about the situation from 5/9. The protests are still going strong today.

When I drive by there I knew it couldn't be a union site due to the sheer number of black workers.
If those two brothers think that hiring some big black guys to stand guard is going to intimidate that union guys, they are really mistaken.
Talking to the union guys that I know, they really can't stand the Post brothers.

Looks like they're just trying to protect the property, not intimidate anyone.
On a neighborhood discussion board, I read that the union guys are having scouts use walkie-talkies to cut off delivery trucks outside the restricted area. Like some paramilitary shit.

Oh, they are very serious about this. Serious and organized. The Post brothers want to use fly-by-nighters, and they don't want that in their town.

I've slowly watched more and more union guys protesting each morning to the point where there's 50- 75 now, and they're surrounding vehicles of the site workers calling them "fat f*cks," "f*cking faggots." I personally saw them threatening a worker in a nice pickup trying to get into the site today. One guy, a fat fellow in a red Phillies cap and sunglasses, personally said "I'll see you later today you fat f*ck. You're dead you fat f*ck."
I talked to a neighbor who said it's the norm and they spend a better part of the morning threatening the black security guards with what he called "racially tinged words." This morning they blocked a delivery truck and all the traffic behing it, including an ambulance, for a half hour. They also crowded Jany's doorway the 45 min I was there this AM and kept using the bathrooms without asking.
One guy seemed really out of place. He was slim and healthy looking, dressed in suit pants and a pressed shirt, light gray slicked-back hair. I figured he was a delegate or something until it turned out he was a cop. The guy in the truck asked what to do and the cop was snickering at him and said "you gotta get through then get through" knowing a bunch of guys had the front of his truck blocked off.
The delivery truck and the people waiting behind it trying to cross 12th blocked off by the union guys alsogot no help from the cops. There were 2 other cops there just watching and doing nothing as these guys blocked traffic during rush hour. One was in uniform. Another was a middle aged lady wearing a dress that you'd wear to a graduation or wedding along with a Philly PD armband.
Obviously calling the cops wasn't going to do any good so I called Fox 29. This is as bad as I've seen it thus far.

Police are union guys through and through. They are for the most part from working class backgrounds. Which side did you think they would take?
Clowns they hire are going to work for $20 an hour. Those guys are not going to stand for it.

That's not my post, I was just quoting from the local forum.
But as for me, I don't really expect cops to take sides, just uphold laws.

must be nice to have a union to tell employers how much they should be paid, rather than the market.

NTFF! I'm not defending these actions Zak is detailing, but we can pretty much thank the unions directly or indirectly for any rights workers have in this country (which still lag far behind most modern societies). Further, if the unions are completely stamped out, you'll start seeing those rights rolled back for everyone as the middle class receives it's death blow.
The "free market" came up with such bright ideas as slavery, child labor, and the company store. Unions came up with living wages and paid vacation. Just sayin'

the unions have gone way past what they used to be about. they are not looking after anyone but the people that run them, and that started years ago.
my wife pays dues every check and has not had one person call her back after health benefits were mistakenly turned off. the secretary at union headquarters told her to "pray". another secretary told her "take the baby to a free clnic". Very helpful.
Now, they are there to charge $80 to hang a sign at a trade show.
Also, why shouldn't people have the right to work for who they want to? If you want to do construction, you have to be union? Thats fucking bullshit
