Real quick, no time here to really read much other than the 1st few sentences of FDs queery- but if youre buying (and ya shoudl if you can) I would recommend (even tho i do not work there anylonger- so its not like im stumpin for the employer or nuttin) the VG 500 Index fund. If there's a cant miss- thats it. Its not like the other higher expense funds because its rather hands off- not uber managed etc. Performance usually equal to or better than those more micro managed funds.

Vanguard is good.. I had a impromptu meeting with a financial planner. His take.. If you are in a 401K program where the Company does not match... Get out.. Open up IRA's.. Based on my age and income he is recommending Roth IRAs. Being relatively new at that.. I thought you could only open 1... Apparently you can have as many as you want.. I am probably going to cut back my 401K contributions and start steering more money toward IRA's...

I think you can only have one Roth IRA, but you can have as many mutual funds as you want and can only contribute a capped amount each year ($5000).
You should be able to open as many standard IRA's as you want, though. Just make sure you max out your Roth before you do anything else.

The account I just opened is through Fidelity and I don't think I can buy Vanguard funds through them. The closest thing i can get through Fidelity is the Spartan Index fund, which looks good on paper. I think you have to open with a minimum investment of $10,000 to get into that fund, though, and I didn't want to put that much into an inidex fund to start.

Buffett suggests the Vanguard Growth Index. Low fees. Good Return over the long haul

So. 2 confirm... 1 Roth and then regular IRAS from there... 10-4 as they say in the South!
