SO, I have decided to get a new set of Irons. I like my Driver(TM), 3 and 5, and I have a 23dgree Mizuno Hybrid that is my money club at 200 out. I shoot most times in the 80's(mid to high), and have been looking to get some new sticks. I have looked at the Ping G-10's. Calaway X-20's and a couple of the Mizunos. I am going to pay the extra fee and get them fitted by a pro, and then take my first lesson, but does anyone have any recomendation on a new set of Irons, or even the big difference between the inside fitting system vs. the "Tract Man" outdoor system.
Thanks....IMS

Before you do anything, find a Golfsmith Store or a good clubbmaker in your area, and get your self fitted.
I make clubs as a hobby and I can't tell you how much I improved the games of my friends by simply adjusting the length & lie of their clubs.
The next most important thing is getting your swingspeed measured. Trust what the guy says and get shafts that match your speed. No one is going to care (or even know) that you use a ladies/senior shaft, they'll care that you stuck that 7 iron pin high from the 1st cut.
One last thing that I do on putters that makes a difference. Rotate the grip 90 degrees so that the flat part is facing the cup. That way there's no way for the head of the putter to twist as long as the back of your palm is tracking toward the hole.

My swing speed in really in between shafts. 95-100. We have a HUGE Golfsmith store that just opened up. It's right down the street from me, on Gleenwood ave. It took over the space left behind when Best By Moved closer to the mall and some ladies shoe place. I love that place, except I HATE hitting of mats. THat's why I may go to this other new place call "Z" fittings. The are part ofa high end driving range with mostly grass tee boxes. I also like to see the true ball flight rather than hitting some screen inside the store.

Surprisingly, you're better off hitting off a mat when getting fitted. They'll put a strip of friction indicator tape on the sole of your club to see if you're making contact with the heel or toe of the club.
Ideally, you want the scuffmark to be in the center of the sole. If the scuff is on the heel, your clubface will close at impact. On the toe, opens it up.
Just make sure you buy a set of irons that can be adjusted. Some cast heads can't be.

I've probably seen a dozen threads like this on various message boards and they all look the same.
Thread Starter: I'm looking for new irons, what do you guys think?
Home Tinkerer: I don't know but make sure you get fitted.
Let me first off say that I do not necessarily disagree with F-poke, but I would interject that the perfect fit is not the panacea it's portrayed to be.
IMS, my advice is to go with the set of irons that you feel most comfortable with. They are not going to improve your game quite as much as you might like/think. I am a Ping guy and I have heard great things about the G-10's, I myself play the original S-59s that came out about 4 years ago.
And if you go through an actual Ping fitter than you are covered. But if you are a normal size dude (say, not below 5'8" or above 6'1") and don't have abnormally long or short arms then a fairly standard loft and lie SHOULD fit you or come very close. Stiff shaft if your swing speed approaches 100. But my only problem with overemphasis on "fit" is that can "fit" yourself to a bad swing or setup habit.
Let's say you are one of those cats that really hunch over and drop your hands low when you address the ball, the scuff tape is gonna tell you you need a flat lie on the clubs when the reality is you need to stand the F up and get the club on a better swing plane.
The best way to improve, IMO, is to learn the fundamentals of a proper golf swing and seek to emulate it. Hogan's "5 Lessons" being amongst the classics in that Dept but there are others. Oh, and practice the shit out the short game.
Good luck, like I said, I've heard nothing but good things about the G-10s, I actually have the 3 wood and like it.

Driver, 3 Wood, Hybrid: Graphite.
Everything else: Steel.
I can't think of a single tour player using graphite in their irons anymore. Maybe I am forgetting someone but I think that shipped basically sailed when Mickelson left Yonex.

Assuming it does not have an abnormally long shaft, hitting a 23 degree hybrid 200+ yards is a pretty big poke, that is approximates a slightly strong 4 iron. I hit my 21 degree right at 200, perhaps a twinge further if I need to. All of which would indicate to me that you need Stiff shafts and you are not "in between".
I have loosely clocked my swing speed at 110, carry distance on my driver around 240 or so and I play stiff.

I have an Old set of Top Flight Irons, they ok 8-10 years ago, but not now. I bought all my others right off the shelf. I 6'0, 220, so off the rack fits me pretty good. I have an 8.5, 300 series Taylor Made that I bought off my buddies dad, and I love that stick. It has a stiff shaft on it, and when I don't come inside out and duck hook the hell out of it, I can put it down fairway a good distance.
It's funny with the 23 degree, I hit my 4 Iron about 180-185 max(most time left or right of my target) but with the Mizuno Hi-Fli, it's an Easy 195-200. I don't even put a 3 in my bag anymore

Pretty soon nobody will. I'd rather carry a 4th wedge than a f'ing 3 iron. And I can hit the 3 but how often does it help as much as a 4th wedge?

For some reason that question just struck me as really, really funny.

Are you talking about how I use my long hard shaft with a BIG head at the end of it to make my balls explode all over the nice trimmed carpet?

Taylormade RAC OS2's procured two weeks ago.... Was playing with a set of "hand me down" Cobra Irons... I have had to adjust irons now due to increased distance.. I love em....
Next item up for bids might be the "Burner"
Anyone got any recommendations on putters???
Getting too hot these days in SC to play golf though...
