Watched Metallica tear the roof off the place in 87 as an opening act for Ozzy and their only prop was a master of puppets banner behind Lars.

Sneaked on the Twisted Sister tour bus and felt up some groupies before being chased off.

I saw too many concerts to name there.

Had tickets against the glass for a Flyers/Devils game. My friend and I were pounding on the glass and being generally obnoxious. Ken Daneyko skated up to us and gave us the evil eye. He is one scary mofo.

Had season tickets to the sixers in the Sean Bradley years. Those were some lean times and they would do anything to get people in the stadium. I think I ended up getting over 20 free games and season long access to the vip club bar (name of it escapes me now).

Watched Hextall's goal.

renee veneziale

parking and pissing on JFK

Zinkoff was the best, ever.

Saw tons of Pro Wrestling. Hogan circa 1984 got the loudest ovation I have heard at any event in the place. The seats shook like crazy.

In 93 I was at a Flyers game during the world series. The place erupted with chants of Lenny.

With my Dad I met Dr J, mo cheeks, andrew toney, moses, Rick tocchet, tim kerr, mark howe. andre the giant, jimmy snuka, hulk hogan, billy joel, Dio...just to name a few.

Game 3 and 6 of the 87 Stanley cup finals were the best events I ever saw in the place.

I'll remember more

I saw that place on TV and from the highway. They should make it a covered parking garage.

First concert - The Kinks in 1980. opening act: Johnny "don't call me Mellencamp" Couger.

Was at a George Thorogood concert there in '85 the night Nova won the NCAA championship. Saw the end of the game with many hundreds on a TV in the concourse - might have been the Men's room even - right before the encore. They put the final score up on the scoreboard right before Thorogood came back for an encore - place went berserk.

Other great concerts there:

Van Halen '84
Clash 84 (post Mick Jones but still a great show)
Tom Petty (early '80s)

Many more I'm forgetting because I'm old.

My Dad was the PA announcer before Lou Nolan, so I spent most winter nights there. I remember skating after the games, while Mom & Dad had a few cocktails at the Blue Line Club.

Other memories:

- Being the Harlem Globetrotters locker room and having Meadowlark Lemon ask me to get him a Coke.

- SummerSlam ?? and watching 3 idiots replicate the Road Warriors finishing move in the bathroom.

- Joe Watson giving me a Tonka truck at a Flyers Christmas party.

- Red Bereson's 6 goals.

- I went to maybe 100 concerts there, but one stands out. December 10, 1980, the day after John Lennon was murdered. I had tickets for Bruce Springsteen (17 rows from the stage). Springsteen came out while the house lights were still up, about 20 minutes before curtain and said he didn't know if there would be a show that night. He said his Hero had been killed and didn't feel like performing, but he would do hid best & try to get through the show. The curtain went at 8:00 and the last encore was at 1:00 (with a 20 minute intermission). Springsteen told a lot of stories (more than usual) and even changed all the color references in his songs to black. It was the best show I ever saw. I laughed, I cried, it became a part of me.

-went to my first sixers game back in the late 70's and during the game saw a rampage in the concourse when a cotton candy salesman left his stand to go the bathroom. I remember this one dad stealing the cotton candy and giving it to his kids.

-saw Van Halen with David Lee Roth back in 1983 or so (Diver Down tour), my girlfriend at the time threw up in the aisle after drinking all afternoon, smoking pot in the parking lot, and then taking speed ("to get up for the show").

So many memories it is sick...but my favorite was the night Guns N Roses opened for Aerosmith in '88. GNR absolutely crushed that night. Amazing how Axl could make it onstage on time when they were the opening act.

Two Metallica shows in '88-'89 on the Justice tour were quite sweet.

The Flyers played a great game against the Lightning in '96 playoffs. I only remember this because within a span of about 5 seconds Lindros crushed two Lightning players along the boards and the Spectrum just absolutely erupted. Great stuff. I think that was the last playoff series won while playing at the Spectrum.

Friend of mine in high school had fantastic season tix for the Flyers, got to sit 7th row center ice for a couple games in about 1984 or 85. Got to see the Edmonton Machine up close and the Canadiens when they were pretty darn good also. That place had a pretty damn good Home Ice Advantage, nothing like the Terrible Wach Center.

I also remember going to Sixers games (usually if the Pistons were in town) and getting a free 2nd nosebleed seat on certain nights if you brought a can of food. Then hoping the Sixers either scored 125 or kept the opponent under 100 to get a free Big Mac, I think.

Oh man I remember that well. Lindros just stared down the rest of the rest of the team after those hits. He was a friggin force before he turned into a pussy.

He was a friggin force before he turned into a vegetable.

Fixed it.

On the hockey topic-- saw Mario Lemieux's first game back after cancer at the Spectrum in 1993. Flyers won the game, but Mario had a goal and two assists, a couple hours after a chemotherapy treatment.

I agree with vegetable. The guy had all the skill, but it came with an eggshell head. It's a shame really.

Am I the only one that thinks it is strange that the sixers will play a regular season game this year and the Flyers a pre-season. Is this an ice issue, ticket issue, all of the above, none of the above?

The games will probably not count towards the season ticket packages. Although they might actually be more expensive than in the new building.

I have a buddy who's birthday is in late October. Thanks to a scheduling quirk, the Birds played at 1 & the Flyers played at 7:30. Another friend and I took him to both. Man I feel old.

olv - no. Not Bill Meltzer.

Were y'all at that show?

I still remember them doing "Santa Claus is coming to Town" with the stacks over the stage draped in these cheap Christmas lights. It looked like they sent one of the roadies out to Gaudios with $20 and said "get as many lights as you can".

It was perfect.

I was at the GnR/A-smith show in '88 as well. Aerosmith got upstaged that night.

My first show ever was Roger Waters in '85. I also saw AC/DC there twice, Bowie once, and the Smashing Pumpkins as well. There may be a few that I'm forgetting, as I was a prolific concert-goer for a while. It was a good setting for an arena show, because the size of the place struck a good balance between size and intimacy. Even in the upper reaches of the place, you could still get a pretty good view of the stage. The size was also good for acoustics, as it wasn't so huge inside that there was an overly-annoying delay between what was happening onstage and what you were hearing.
