I've been so busy at work, I haven't had any time to kill here on the level. One of the things that sucks about my job is that I will go through periods of weeks and months when I have more work than I know what to do with.
Another reason: micro-management. What difference does it make to a boss who I get the job done as long as it gets done?
Sometimes a job can just suck the life out of you...I'm sure you are all in the same boat.
Lemme hear your stories.

By and large, I like my job and love my office.
However, the routine reports I produce take a lot of time and I know no one really pays attention to, at least enough to justify the time I put in. There are times when I'm late or forget to do one for the month and no one notices. The other parts of the job make it worthwhile, though.

I work in an office with no windows, the guy in the cubicle next to me blabbers on and on about nothing in particular and my boss has recently discovered the joy of "meetings" that take up time I need to get my work done.
On the plus side, I get to come to work in shorts and a tee shirt, I take a 40 minute cigar break almost daily and I have access to the internet with no filters so I can waste as much time on the internet as I do in meetings.

I just quit my job. It sucked because I worked with a shitload of incompetent people, having to fix their bullshit, my boss can be a real cunt (although she does not always realize it), and I was not getting paid enough.
On the plus side I pretty much had the run of the place, up to and including Dino's deal with the internet. I will spend most of the rest of this afternoon analyzing my Division's lineup for our All Star game in Fantasy baseball. That, and fucking around here and with email.
On to bigger and better things after taking a week's vacation next week. I think I am in for a bit more work at the new gig, but more money. And who knows yet about internet, etc.

Micro-management which leads to a lack of appreciation. That pretty much sums up my gig. But I know that it isn't very unique. Most jobs have reasons to dislike them. You just keep looking until you find the one that annoys you the least and/or pays you the most.

My job is annoying, like Dino's, because we have countless meetings about nothing, frequent department "get-togethers" about new initiatives (think: the Hawaiian shirt day scene in Office Space and my travel schedule is unpredictable.
On the plus side, though:
-I'm paid really well for what I do
-I don't have to come in on Tuesdays & Thursdays
-inordinate number of POAs for an office setting
-I married the vice-president

The company I worked for was acquired a year and a half ago by a larger company. In that time they moved us to a new location with a cubicle environment (I had an office), they took away bonuses (I got 2 performance bonuses a year), they instituted employee contribution for health benefits (the old company used to pay the whole thing), they started filtering our internet access, forced us to use Internet Explorer (I love Firefox) and they forced a ton of new processes and procedures on us. And like most big companies, they love to have meetings that prevent you from getting the real work done.
For me, my workload doubled but my salary didn't, I was stripped of any design authority and they essentially reduced me to a production artist over the past 15 months.
So I just gave my two weeks notice on Monday.
I realize a lot of what I mentioned up top is the norm for most of corporate America. But it still sucks when you have it for 5 years and then it's taken away.
The best things about the company I'm leaving is... they let me work from home 2 days a week and they have summer hours between Memorial Day and Labor Day (3:00 dismissal on Fridays).
But now I control my own destiny and creative opportunities.

Here's a good example of why my job suck(ed).
I just sat down with my boss to explain the process of how I upload a scanned inventory from the golf shop each month and make an inventory file for adjustments. We use a bar code scanner exactly like any of you've seen all over the place, identical to the one in the link. First step in the process is to scan the bar codes, of course. I wanted to briefly show her how to use the gun before getting to the (SLIGHTLY) more complicated upload and data manipulation. She had a big sheet of paper to take notes. She starts off with "Pull Trigger to Scan Bar Code".
Seriously. Try extrapolating that mindset to every facet of the workday. link

GGB, my warehouse manager who I finally got to quit a few months ago was EXACTLY like that. I would literally have to type out completely idiot proof, step by step instructions for any computer related task. She could never learn anything, was either unwilling or unable to try to figure out WHAT she was doing - could only parrot off an instruction sheet.
She was great for testing whether or not instructions were, in fact, idiot proof though.
And no, I didn't hire her - supervision of her was given to me after the fact by our C.O.O. Took me almost 3 years to get her to quit so I could hire my own guy.

Again, Dino, we agree. Every office needs one person like that as a guinea pig of sorts. If that person can understand and complete Task A, then you know you've done an adequate job of training and or explaining the process.
Around here that's known as the Margaret test.

I find that the correlation between note-taking and stupidity is real, real high.

for simple jobs, perhaps. not for higher level ones. i also think it's pretty disrespectful to go into a meeting with a superior without a notepad.

Flesh, I agree with the notepad/superior thing. Those are not really the "notes" I was referring to though. That said, I rarely actually write anything down anyway.
And I sort of disagree on the Simple/Higher level thing. To some extent, true, but I still think that when people are writing they are not learning or understanding.

Agreed again. It is "important" to have a notepad so you have the potential to write down all the "important" information gleaned at the "important" meeting that is preventing me from doing my job.
