Seth, I can say that I hate the excuse-laden female docs who always have to leave early for day care and so forth. Should thought about the shitty hours BEFORE you went to medschool.

I understand making allowances for pediatric visits, sick kids, daycare etc. But when you don't come in early (usually late) and leave early and shit on your colleauges leaving them extra work....I call bullshit!

I have no objections to them, but you summarized it nicely...they want it both ways. Want to bake cookies with the kids, go to soccer games, oh and in their spare time do surgery.

It is frustrating to me to see a woman who goes into medicine, goes into a demanding specialty, only to say she doesn't want to do it/hates it and will only work part time. Too many other people for whom that is a serious dream/goal, who're true grinders and conscientious lose out on those opportunities.

I know our residency program has enough dirty old men who will rate reasonably attractive female applicants very high. When it comes to work, the amount of whining and dumping and avoidance just really pisses me off. I'm very interested in women, but forfuckssake I can't condone selecting a "reasonably" (not many in medicine) attractive ditz that won't benefit me in the slightest but will overwhelm the room with too much estrogen. Screw that. I once told a colleague off who was explaining that one female resident was very "smart"....just shocked. This chick told me that her best day in residency was the day she got to go home early. I remember thinking, she hadn't even had the opportunity to be that burned out from work (3 months into residency). Sad...she didn't even enjoy the work. Once it becomes a job in this profession, the patient suffers. Anyway, I told him, "don't let pussy cloud your mind".

One colleague wanted to recruit a candidate cuz she was "blonde and likes to play golf". I told him to hire a hot tech. Less grief, easier to talk to and easier to get her off. High powered women are too tense.

I dated one for a year. She'd get pissed if I got frustrated when she worked late (averaged 12 hour days), ran after work (marathon runner), and slept at 10:30...so, it meant no time together. She also was nearly impossible to get off without serious effort. She also utilized the "I have to get up early" excuse too often for me. She'd bitch if I worked late or my schedule didn't allow time for her when SHE wanted it. It was as close to dating a man as I'd ever come.
