I want to personally thank my wife who is from Guatemala for exposing me to Cuban Jazz. One of the best albums I have purchased.

BI,
While i know some people here hate Hall & Oates, I appreciate your sentiment.
But-
it's called "blue-eyed soul" and
their best song is "Sara Smile".
True story- this girl at Pitt named Sara told me her boyfriend Seth had just dumped her, and long story short, I bought her a beer, sang her Sara Smile, and then made her forget her troubles

BI, you jackass.
That video you posted isn't even close to jazz, funk or soul.
Start your own thread if you want to play that.
Good Lord.

Fred,
Just goes to show your IGNORANCE...
This is CUBAN JAZZ where that ELECTRONICA SHIT you listen to originated from...
While you were still swimming in your Daddy's Nut Sack.. Jazz like this was popular....

For someone who is supposedly "from Philly" you sure are a dipshit. That crap you posted might be popular in Guatemala, but most of us speak English, and this ain't a kung fu movie- subtitles don't work. As for the music itself-
eh.

Sorry, I fell asleep while Hall and Oates was playing.
And it is "Blue-eyed Soul," and I'm not much of a fan.
To me, "Philly Soul" is Gamble & Huff and Philadelphia International.
BI, if you dig Cuban jazz, I'd recommend you check out Marc Ribot y Los Cubanos Postizos. I couldn't find a video I liked, but you can preview the tracks on this site: http://www.last.fm/music/Marc+Ribot+y+Los+Cubanos+Postizos
I'm a big fan of that album.
Also, you should rent the film Los Zafiros: Music From the Egde of Time. I think you and your wife would like it.

And seriously...Floyd?
Don't get me wrong. I love Floyd, but "Shine On Your Crazy Diamond" is not jazz.

Fred, I'd always liked James Brown when I was growing up, but it was more of the earlier stuff like "I Got You" and "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag."
Later in college, I convinced my roommate to join BMG from me (Remember BMG?), and I got him to get the James Brown Boxed Set. My funk education was born. I'd never really heard anything like "Mother Popcorn" before, and that set me off on a new path.
About a year or two after that, I was riding in a car with my then-girlfriend when Annapolis' WRNR played "Crazyhorse Mongoose" by Galactic. I went online and discovered that they were a jamband from New Orleans who had a reputation for playing marathon shows that were really funky. I picked up their album, which was great, and then I saw them live, which was excellent. I joined a discussion list for them, and that's when I learned about The Meters.
After The Meters and a few trips to Nola for Jazzfest, I became pretty devoted to the funk. I like a lot of different types of music, but in the last year or two funk and soul has dominated my collection. It's a great time to get into this kind of music because there are so many great retro acts that are turning out original tunes with an old-school feel. I'm talking about acts like:
Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings (actually anything produced by Daptone Records)
The New Mastersounds
Baby Charles
The Budos Band
The Menahan Street Band
Eli Paperboy Reed
The Diplomats of Solid Sound featuring the Diplomettes
The Sweet Divines

With all due respect to funky49, I think you Talon should be starting the "Funk Thread"- it would be nice if we could keep the musical genres separate AND KEEP THE HALL AND OATES AND PINK FLOYD OUT OF THE JAZZ THREADS

Talon-
First off- I love James Brown.
Probably more so than any other artist here.
But I have a hard time grouping him with these other artists, because while the "Godfather" and "the hardest working man in show biz", he is on another plane. Now if you wanted TO START A FUNK THREAD, I would be sniping at anyone who didn't put him at the top (or near the top) of the list. There IS NO ARGUMENT there.

More proof Fred is indeed on the "down low" he loves James Brown... Its okay Fred.. You can come out of the closet.. Brown is dead and I think he was FINALLY buried... I know there were some "legal wife" issues holding things up...
BTW JB is/was a great artist..

Talon-
I was torn whether to put this CLASSIC in the R&B or Jazz thread- but I just had to get this one up because I screwed up and didn't put Earth, Wind & Fire in my top 5...
Somebody's getting bumped
enjoy
