Almost switched from Verizon and purchased an iPhone today. Still seriously contemplating it.
Anyone have one? If so, why is it the cat's meow other than the purdy window dressing?

Eh, I'd wait for the Blackberry Bold if I was in the market for a new cell phone.

Jules,
Who are you using these days??? Check out the latest and greatest in technology.. Sprint has an equivalent and Alltel and T-Mobile are not far behind.. Verizon has some cool gadgets out as well...
Personally these days "it's pick your poison." I need email capability on my phone and I am NOT so sure if the new SAMSUNG gizmo from SPRINT whom I have used for over 12 years is the answer either.

I basically realized that when I go to conferences, I lug my laptop only to check email. Retarded.
Verizon charges a separate bill for GPS (an extra 10 bucks/month) and their data plan is expensive.
Sprint was pretty lousy on the customer support side.
I haven't seen the "Dare" or the "Bold". I realize the latter isn't out. I did see that my colleague had flawless GPS performance on his iPhone. My brother has the Blackberry Curve. Liked it for the most part. Comparatively, liked the screen on the iPhone more. The difference is that one costs 200-300 bucks and the other is free with a 2 year plan and the monthly rate is 10 bucks cheaper.
Liked that the iphone would eliminate the ipod I'd have to take with me to the gym or on trips.
Probably going to check it out again and see if it strikes me as useful. Loved that you could get Pandora on the iphone. Pretty awesome but it'd sap battery life quickly.

If BMA recommends the Blackberry, I'd probably go with the iPhone.
The iPhone looks like it's got some cool things you can add to it, and I think it's priced comparably to recent Blackberry models. Realistically, I don't think you're going to go really wrong either way.
In terms of productivity, I like the blackberry because of its keyboard.

Loved that you could get Pandora on the iphone.
For now, but the RIAA is in the final stages of trying to crush it.

I was thinking about going with the iPhone, but I didn't want to switch service, so I got a Voyager instead. The keyboard is the only real reason, since I'd go nuts if the device was all touch-screen, but that's me.
You can't go wrong with an iPhone, and since you're looking at it to double as your iPod, I think you've pretty much made your decision.

We've covered this one before (I think for flesh), but it really boils down to what you want to do with your phone, especially whether or not you want to type a lot.
If you need to type, you're going to want a phone with a keyboard. If you just care about checking (but not responding in depth to) email, then you don't need a keyboard as much. This also applies to documents, spreadsheets, etc.
Personally, I type a ton on my phone and will probably have carpal tunnel syndrome within a year or two, but I love my keyboard on my Treo.
As far as having mp3s on your phone for the gym goes, you don't need an iPhone for that. They all do it and do it well enough. You won't have the sexy cache of the Apple brand, but I'm a Mac owner, and I couldn't care less about having iTunes on my phone. The music still sounds fine without it.
Web browsing looks nice on the iPhone, and the quasi-GPS is nice, too. GPS is available for other phones, but you have to pay for it. How often do you need GPS? I hear so many people tell me how badly they need it, but I wonder how mankind survived for centuries without it.

Agree 100% on this whole GPS phenomenon. Don't people realize that mapquest.com is pretty accurate and FREE? My buddy, who doesn't travel for work and has a 20 minute commute, was talking getting one for his car. I mean, for fucks sake, what is wrong with people?

Sony/Ericcson Xperia X1 is coming out soon. Might as well check that out relative to the iphone. If you need to be typing a lot, do you require the tactile feedback of real keys/buttons or is the virtual keyboard of the iPhone okay?
Pandora going away is sad.
Agreed, poop in iphones for the gym. cheapie mp3 player FTW.

I hear so many people tell me how badly they need it, but I wonder how mankind survived for centuries without it.
I do a lot of traveling for gigs and stuff, and it's convenient for real-time spoken directions instead of carrying around sheets of paper. Plus it's cool for locating the nearest "such and such" store without calling 411 (not like they would know, anyway).
My life isn't a crippled wreck without it, but it makes things easier when I'm using it. I pretty much get my $10 usage every month, but your mileage may vary. Especially if you don't travel and you think it's cool to be tracked.

Just got an iPhone from a doctor two months ago, who simply gave it to me because he couldn't stand typing on it. I never had a phone that had full keyboard prior to my iPhone, and I'm a big fan of this thing. I cannot speak to features vis-a-vis other phones, but I certainly can tell you what I like about it.
1. Customization: There is so much software available for this thing that it surprises me sometimes. I currently only have a few programs loaded right now, but I happen to think that having VoIP available on my cell phone is pretty cool.
2. Keyboard: while some people may hate it, I find it fine (not used to anything else). Plus, the use of a completely electronic keyboard makes for some slick Alt. Language implementation. For example, I can switch to Hebrew at the click of a button while I'm typing, ??? ??. Plus, it wasn't too hard to type this thread.
3. Better than an iPod: the interface is much slicker now, allowing for one- touch repeat and shuffle, which you couldn't do on an iPod.
4. Int'l: the phone integrates well with foreign networks, which are all GSM (the reason you can only get an iPhone in the states from AT&T). When I got to Israel, I simply swapped mem. cards with my rental phone, turned the data feature off, and went along my merry way.
All that being said, many people want their phone ready to go out of the box, and much of what I like about this phone was only available after hijacking it and installing third party software (a simple task, IMO, but one that everyone may not necessarily enjoy).
FWIW

I think I'm going to do it. Just saw one feature that kicked ass compared to all other phones...the voicemail.
It lists the voicemails so you can listen out of order, has a scroll bar to go back through the message or to a certain point in it, and can be cleared without even having to listen to it or "signing" in.
One thing I didn't like or didn't figure out while playing with it at the Apple store was if you could send a text message WHILE talking. This has been helpful for me in the past.
There are other cool applications on it that I haven't figured out yet. On my "to-get" list for tomorrow. The typing thing isn't as efficient as on a PDA phone, but the display is head and shoulders above the PDAs I saw.

Forgot about visual voicemail. I don't use it because I don't have a data plan, but it certainly was nice when I had it.

Well, I got it. Can safely say that the initial reaction is holy crap....pretty amazing. Really like the screen. The typing isn't as easy as on a keyboard, but it isn't very hard or cumbersome either.
Got the Pandora App first. Been using it since I got it. Made the mistake of getting a rubber case with a printed pattern. Its impossible to get the frigging thing out of my jeans which aren't snug at all without turning my pocket inside out. Going back to get a hard case instead. The GPS takes a few minutes to orient to the satellite, but isn't bad at all for a handheld device.
Throwing photos, videos and stuff onto this is very easy and just as easy to retrieve. Setting up my email accounts was simple.
Just very easy to navigate this thing.
The SMS text menu was a little more cumbersome than I'm used to, but wasn't prohibitively so. Even for a "business" smart phone, this is pretty darned good. Admittedly, I'm not that hard core a user as others might be for their bidnesses.

the iphone orients position via triangulation of cell phone towers. GPS hardware is unnecessary on it.

Funky, I think the issue was more that it doesn't function like a traditional GPS unit giving you street by street directions. Instead, it provides your position and a regional map. That's it. You can seek directions through google and it will list them for you, but it won't tell you that you have to take the exit on the right in 400 m....for example.
