flesh, I have noticed that, although I haven't particularly seen it with black women. There seems to be a particular type of black man, usually in his 20s or 30s and wearing basketball shorts, who won't move over. This guy has to sit with his legs spread wide, and in those spaces where three people can easily sit on a bench, he'll see to it that it's two people max.

I actually wrote something about this for a writing class a couple of months ago. We had to write about something we hate (and I really fucking hate when these guys do this), attempting to establish a narrator's voice in the process. Now that I look at it, it's kind of funny that it also touches on a recent Level discussion about staring at men's crotches in the locker room. In any case, I don't want to post it here, but I'll email you a copy of the rant.

I'm not afraid of the content. I just don't want to publicly publish something I've written that hasn't been copyrighted on a forum where I can't remove it and it could easily be stolen.

I don't think it's some brilliant work of art, but I don't want to make it easy for someone to potentially plagiarize my writing/ideas.

when you are on the subway and trying to sit down, do you notice that black people (particularly black women) will make no effort to shift over, move their elbows, etc, so that you can have some room, too?


Maybe at the same time you are judging them by their looks, they're figuring by your looks that you aren't worth moving for

Maybe they are just rude and inconsiderate, the way lots of blacks behave in public spaces.

Fred, it's not that ALL black people won't move. It's just that these particular people, who happen to be black, won't move. I don't think it's really a racial thing. My guess is that it's some sort of thug culture machismo bullshit.

NEAG, if you really want to see it, I'll send it, but it's not much more than a writing exercise. I don't even mention that the offenders are black. Maybe you'd be amused by the mild homophobia.

In the warmer months, when I don't have the benefit of gloves, I try not to leave the house without hand sanitizer. I'm lucky that I rarely have to ride the train during peak hours and can usually get a seat, but there are certainly times when it's packed in the car and you don't have much choice but to grab onto one of those germ factories.
