Huh? The point would speak to how high of a crime area this is, not how black or non-black anyone is?
What would that have to do with the incident, though? It's completely and utterly unrelated to what occurred.
The issue people are having is they heard "gated community" and saw the Hollister t-shirt, so they assumed he was a BINO (black in name only). Fox and their extreme rightist empire is now trying to get the word out to their base (racist whites) that this kid was a real black, and therefore should be viewed with skepticism.
Otherwise, the neighborhood he lived in does not matter. By all accounts, he committed no crime. By all accounts, he was unarmed. By all accounts, the shooter was instructed NOT to follow him.
What difference does the neighborhood in which his father lives make to any of these material facts?
I think it's goofy that a neighborhood watch person can carry a gun, but if an altercation did occur it sounds to me like Florida law might actually support this guy being let go? Make no mistake, I think he's a vigilante douche that never should have been given this position nor been allowed to carry the weapon, given that he ignored direct police orders.
Couple things...
- First, I don't think he was even "on duty" in his neighborhood watch. This was freestyle. Not that it's a super important distinction, but if he was in an actual neighborhood watch at that time, he would have been with other people and this incident likely would have been avoided.
- This part of your post speaks more to the investigation and debate that should be happening. What happened? Did he break the law? Can a stalker who disobeys dispatch and chases a free citizen of the United states later kill that person and claim "self defense"?
Those are all legitimate questions (among many more).
Posting the kids twitter feeds, the local police leaking his school records, researching crime statistics in his neighborhood, trying to find pictures of him where he looks blacker, etc...those actions are completely and utterly shameful. They are at best morally bankrupt and at worst racist.

I would agree with the slow leaks about missed school time and minor marijuana charges. Seems like it's the police that is leaking it though, no?
It would appear the police are leaking it and an all-too-eager rightist media is using the police's shameful attempt to take the pressure off their investigation as an opportunity to stoke their base for political gain.

It gets even worse....today FOX came out and said they discovered that Trayvon bought the Skittles and Iced Tea with the intention of eating them for the following day's breakfast

Agree on all of this part, might have a comment on the first part in a bit. But the question to me is, does Florida have a shitty law on it's books that allows a racist vigilante to get away with murder and walk free? And if so, I am not sure if rallies and pressure on the Police Department can really change that, in this case.

This can obviously all be settled with an investigation into just how those Skittles and Iced Tea were (if?) paid for, assuming they qualify.

In other news, Spike Lee is still a fucktard.
Spike Lee wasn't the first to retweet the erroneous address on Twitter blindly accepted by many as that of George Zimmerman, the man who fatally shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin last month. But the filmmaker's message -- sent last week to his 240,000 Twitter followers -- was the most viral.
Elaine McClain, 70, the owner of the misidentified house in Sanford, Florida, and her husband David McClain, 72, tell news outlets they're now "living in fear." The address spread on Twitter, accompanied by threats of violence, and the couple are now staying at a hotel "to avoid the spotlight and possible danger," reports the Orlando Sentinel. link

Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law, from what I heard, deals mostly with home invasions and the like. Since the confrontation happened on public ground, it won't apply here (as such, Zimmerman's lawyer has stated he's going to use regular self-defense as his, um, defense)

How do you claim self-defense if you are stalking someone?
Does stand your ground allow you to shoot people that get in your way?

I chase after you with a gun
You feel threatened by me
Your reaction causes me to feel threatened by you
I shoot and kill you
I don't see how this isn't manslaughter.

Stand Your Ground may be a great law that has saved many lives and made people feel safer.
It shouldn't apply to this case.

It's gonna be a hell of a case to find (or serve on) a jury for if it comes to it, that's for sure.

Yeah, no shit. What's the thought process on something like that? You're just okay with him and his family (if he has a family) being harassed for months (or worse)?
I think this situation stinks, but it's probably a little early to send in the flash mob.

Meanwhile, the 2nd Amendment crowd must be sitting back and smiling that AGAIN nobody is talking about the simple fact: if this jagoff Zimmerman wasn't licensed to carry a firearm, the result of all this would probably have been a black eye and fat lip.

in other news, it now seems a foregone conclusion that the affordable healthcare act, understood by almost all legal scholars to be completely constitutional according to all legal precedent, will in fact be repealed.
whatever you may feel about the nightmare of mandating healthcare insurance to uninsured american who are, you know, going to be giving much more costly healthcare in ER rooms anyway, it's hard to describe the way this court continues to absolutely eviscerate everything we understand about jurisprudence in furthering their ultra-right wing politics.
i really loved scalia's brilliant analogy that the mandate was akin making everyone buy broccoli since we all have to eat (in response to the position that the law was regulating trade since everyone needs healthcare at one point or another). i can't wait to read the holding when it comes down in june.

That fat pig Scalia is something else, ftr.
When they rule the mandate unconstitutional (as they will, it seems), they need to throw it all out. You can't achieve this type of health care reform (Republican Created Free Market Health Care Reform) without the mandate.
I'm no champion of the law, but our country is depressing. Party line votes from your state house all the way to the Supreme court and answers that change depending on who poses the question? What a weirdo country.

Would we even be having a discussion if it was a black guy who stalked a white kid, shot him and then claimed "self-defense"?
